You ever look back at one of your "in the spur of the moment" decisions and wonder what lead to it? I looked back at this and could only think how much I enjoyed it.
I am guessing it was the cold winds I came across in the parking lot that froze my 3 working brain cells. I never really go out of my comfort zone. It is always birds, regular meat, and seafood. Rabbit? Whoa. That is a brave choice I wouldn't make in a sane moment.
The menu was extremely tempting. It is as if they put something everybody loves and paired it with something extremely odd. I specifically remember craving carbs at the table. The mash potatoes sounded perfect for the moment. But what I didn't realize is what it would come with.
As proud as I am with my command over the Russian language, there always comes an event where I am forced to doubt myself. This was one of those moments. When the plate arrived I was a bit confused. I asked the server what I was just served. With great enthusiasm, he said rabbit cutlets and mashed potatoes with pickled cucumbers and a whole tomato.
I was more taken aback than impressed. I realized I had only understood the "cutlet" printed on the menu and completely ignored the "rabbit" it said because I didn't feel like reading the word and translating it in my brain.
So what? Great experiences to make here! That is what! I have never actually tried rabbit cutlet in my life...ever!
The only thing that really shook me was the whole tomato lying on my plate. It wasn't grilled or boiled. Just pure and simple red tomato. Hmm. Interesting.
My first bite into the rabbit cutlet really shoved down all my anxiety about this new food. It was incredible! The cutlet itself was made in a Kyiv Cutlet style. Those are usually made from chicken. A hollow cutlet with a lot of melter butter waiting for you inside it.
The meat itself is so much better than chicken. It is so much lighter and soft. The flavor isn't as strong and it isn't as chewy. I loved the breading on the cutlet. It wasn't crunchy but soft. Perfect for light meat like rabbit's I guess.
To wash it all down I decided I would go for a nice little soup. Guess what? Lost in translation...again! In my mind what I had ordered was a broth with eggs and herbs. What I actually missed was that it was under the noodles section and not the soup section.
Two in a row! But hey, you know what they say, right? Carbs go good with carbs. The rabbit cutlet was just enough to build my appetite. The soup...or noodles...or whatever would seal the deal. The scent was amazing. I couldn't wait to dive in.
The broth was really mild. The perfect kind of mild. Not too salty, not too bland. Just somewhere in between. What I really liked about the bowl was the noodles. I think it was some sort of linguine because of its thickness and the pipe like design it has.
It really went perfectly after the rabbit cutlet. I almost forgot to mention the mash. Oh, what a mash! The type that melts in your mouth like butter. So delicious. The perfect bite recommended was a small pinch from the cutlet with a scoop of mash on top followed by a full bite of pickle. And what can I say...I think I love rabbit cutlets!
