"Moron ma'am/sir!"
You might find yourself dumbfounded by an Ate calling you this as you walk inside a local market or as you went out of a seaport if you are not a local of our province Leyte. Don't take offense, they are just trying to sell their moron products. A chocolatey, sweet and delicious rice cake delicacy popular in the provinces of Eastern Visayas region and that includes our province.
Moron is a favorite tasty treat family, relatives or people who came from our province would bring back to their homes as pasalubong. It is also a favorite snack among locals. During occassions and important events, this delicious snack occupies a special place on the table. These are favorites among other foods served.
When I did my weekend shopping, my suki tried hard to sell moron to me. I wasn't planning to buy one but with her convincing sales talk, she got me. I guess aside from being able to sell her moron, she wanted me to have a taste of it. She flexed how delicious it was as compared to any other moron sold in the market. Since moron is one of my favorite among kakanin varieties, I gave in.
At home, immediately I took a bite of it as I was little curious if this moron was really good. I was kinda praying that I won't get disappointed and I wouldn't feel that my money would go to waste. By the way, each moron costs Php 15 or 0.27$. I bought 5 pieces.
Each moron was wrapped with banana leaves. It's the only way to wrap a moron as far as I know.
I cut it into half. Seeing its texture and consistency I already knew this one is good. It is soft and add moist. I can see the pieces of peanuts which is my favorite.
There were also small slices of cheese.
To get a bite, you have to peel off the banana leaf wrap. When I took a bite, it was a delight. I was not disappointed because this moron tasted perfectly according to my taste palette. It's not so sweet and I feel like I can taste every ingredients of it.
The word moron may sound bad to others especially English speaking people but not for us as this tasty goodness satistifies our food cravings.
When you come and visit Leyte, moron is a must try.
