This past week, I was sitting at my desk doing some work when my Google Chat messages lit up. That is the way my wife and I keep in touch during the work day even though her office is just a short walk from mine. Her job is much different from mine and while the majority of my time is at a desk in front of a computer, she is very rarely in her office.
Anyway, she messaged me in the middle of the day because she was asking me if I wanted to go on a date Saturday. She thought we could drive a couple of towns over and do some shopping and then have a little lunch. Clearly I said yes, otherwise what would be the point of this post!
By the time we finished our shopping it was close to 1:00 and we were well beyond hungry. We had our lunch choices narrowed down to two locations. The first was a sandwich shop called Max and Emily's. Since they were closing at 2:00, it was decided that we would instead visit Vin Trofeo's. We had been wanting to try this place for quite some time, but due to circumstances we were never able to make it. On Saturday we changed that, and I am so glad we did.
The restaurant is not very big with only about fifteen tables in the whole place. Probably the largest seating section is the bar. It wraps around towards the entrance and sports about fifteen to twenty seats. Since there was no one else sitting at it, that is where and I decided we would sit.
They had a fairly large selection of beers on tap as well as in the bottle. They also had a decent selection of liquor and specialty drinks. My wife decided to get one that was a boozy take on a rootbeer float. It had tap rootbeer in it, Captain Morgan spiced rum, creamer, and some whip cream. It was fantastic. I decided to go with a draft beer since they had Oktoberfest on tap even though it is February!
As you can see from the opening image, we also got an order of cheesy bread to start things off. It was a bit greasy, but otherwise fantastic. When you come to a place like this you have to expect a little bit of grease. I mainly attribute it to the cheese blend that they were using. Again, not much you can complain about there. It was the perfect way to start.
It appears they have a buffet that you can opt in for if you want. They put full pizzas out and you simply go up and take a slice or two as you see fit. They also have a small salad bar. Since we are not really fans of buffets (my wife especially), we opted to just order our own pizza. It turned out to be a good thing we did.
Our nieces were playing in their first playoff game this weekend, so I decided to pull the live stream up on my phone and watch that as we waited for our pizza to come out. If you want all the details from that game you will need to check in with my post later today. I will give you a full recap.
Also, before you worry that I was too busy watching the game and not conversing with my wife during our date, no need. She was watching the game too. In fact, it was her that asked if I could bring it up on my phone. Having been quite the basketball player in high school herself, my wife is a very avid fan of watching her nieces play.
During the time that we were waiting, waitresses kept walking by with what I believe is their signature dill pickle pizza. It looked really good and we were starting to question if we had made the wrong choice ordering the bbq chicken pizza.
Then ours showed up and it removed any doubt from our minds. I am sure the pickle pizza is great and I will likely try it again if we go back, but this bbq chicken pizza was fantastic. I apologize for the photo, it has been a hard process trying to convince my wife to take pictures horizontally versus vertically. She is getting better, but she still forgets sometimes.
This pizza consisted of a standard crust with bbq sauce as the base. They then added grilled chicken, red onions, and bacon. Finally drizzling it with regular bbq sauce and mustard based sauce. It was so amazing.
Remember I mentioned the buffet and how it was good that we didn't partake in that? Well, as it turns out, they were very short staffed on our visit here. They were having trouble keeping up with all of the orders and putting pizzas out on the buffet. Apparently there were people waiting for pizza on the buffet and only got a chance to grab one or two slices.
We heard the business tell them that they were not going to charge them full price due to the inconvenience. That seemed like the right thing to do from my point of view. Hats off to them for their great customer service.
As my wife and I were finishing up, we heard one of the cooks come to the front and tell the waitress that the water stopped working back in the kitchen.
It seems like this was just a really bad day for Vin Trofeo's. Lucky for and I we already got our food and our service was fantastic despite the commotion. Being our first time visiting this place, a couple of different decisions could have made our experience much less pleasing.
Despite all of that, Vin Trofeo's is definitely worth another visit. We only ate about half of the pizza and took it home to have as a snack later that night. Oddly enough, it tasted a lot heavier and richer when we got it home. I don't know if it was a heat thing or what (since we ate it cold at home). It was still good, but not quite as good as it was fresh.
This is the kind of place that I would be visiting quite frequently if I was within walking distance. There is a good chance you would find me bellied up to the bar on a Friday or Saturday night enjoying some good artisan "Za".
