Today, my wife and i are celebrating our 2nd 25th anniversary. Sounds strange? We have the weddings, government (for visa simplicity), Taiwan (today), and US (11/7). Were silicon celebrate the government wedding, but we celebrate the other two.
My wife wanted to try a little Korean restaurant that recently opened. Sounded good to me. I was surprised by how small it was. There was room for about 20 people. Luckily, there was a table.
We ordered a pork “hotpot” that came with seafood pancakes.
They offer free appetizers, tea, and soup. Let’s start with the appetizer. I thought they were brilliant.
Edamame is a perfect appetizer. I could make a while meal of these if they weren’t so oily. I don’t know if they soak them in oil or sprinkle them. But the bottoms are really slick.
The next freebee was thinly sliced mangoes. I was expecting them to be spicy or pickled, but they were sweet.
This is a popular tofu snack here. I’m not sure if this is authentic Korean or Taiwan influenced. When foods enter other countries, there are changes made to appease the populous. Hence, when we go to the US Chinese food is nothing like here.
The final appetizer was pickled radish, also thinly cut.
The soup was very watery and very little of anything inside. The tea was barley tea.
The seafood pancakes were very delicious and served with a spicy soy sauce for dipping.
Finally, the piece of resistance, the pork hotpot.
The style of hotpot surprised me. It was more like a Thai style pot than Taiwan. Taiwan hotpot is a real pot. This is more like a frying pan with the middle elevated for cooking meat.
Here we are adding more raw pork to the “pot”. The elevated section worked well. But we still cooked it a little in the soup, just to be safe.
It was a very nice anniversary meal.
