Welcome D.P. Dough to Charleston, WV
The time has come at last, we no longer are forced to endure painful anticipation. The brand new D.P. Dough restaurant has opened its doors in downtown Charleston. The soft opening was 4-23-21, with a grand opening scheduled to happen at an unannounced date in the near future.
Located conveniently at 166 Summers St (where Subway used to be), beside First Watch. The spacious interior is now freshly remodeled and looks absolutely beautiful, plus the food is fantastic too. You are surely going to want to visit as soon as possible. It shouldn’t be hard to find the right time since they are open crazy late!

Now let me give you an overview of how an experience at Charleston's newest restaurant will go. Plus I'll give you some tips on how to best take advantage of reward opportunities and things to avoid when visiting D. P. Dough in downtown Charleston.
To each his zone
D.P. Dough offers a wide range of food:
- Calzones
- Salads
- Dunkers & Wings
- Tots
- Stix
- Desserts
You can view the full menu at https://www.dpdough.com/menu
Most people will come for the calzones and there are plenty of options in that domain. There are around 20 different calzones, plus the ability to build your own zone (Construction Zone) with well over 30 different options of toppings. One could for instance build a breakfast calzone with bacon, sausage, egg, cheese, and tater tots.
Chicken wings with various sauces are available, both bone-in and boneless. Also on the menu are some decadent tots with cheese and bacon.
If you are in the mood for something sweet, try a milkshake, apple/cherry pie zone, cookie dough, or cinnamon stix.
Order online and earn rewards
This is my own personal recommendation, but it is honestly a no-brainer. Be sure to create a free account on https://www.dpdough.com/. This will allow you to order your food online and have it waiting for you when you arrive. Plus you will have the benefit of earning reward points at a rate of 1 point per dollar spent (before tax and tip). It only costs 75 points to receive a free calzone and there are other rewards that require even less.
This means that even if all you order is a calzone every time, after about 10 visits you can get your next zone for free. If you plan on frequenting D. P. Dough Charleston, the reward points are a must. An added bonus is that you can also redeem those reward points at other D. P. Dough locations, such as the restaurants in Huntington and Morgantown.
This is all made even easier by the fact that there is a pick-up window located at the far right of the front counter (opposite end of the register.) If you choose to prepay online, then you can skip the queue and obtain your order in a matter of seconds. Just make sure you don't forget your bottled drink from the refrigerator if you ordered one.
Delivery is offered through GrubHub only.
What does D.P. mean?
In the mid 1980’s, a dude and his mom came up with an idea that would change college life forever: calzones! Dan (the dude) and Penny (his mom) named their new restaurant D.P. Dough after their initials. The first D.P. Dough opened in 1987. Today, D.P. Dough delivers ooey, gooey, cheesy happiness on and around college campuses throughout the United States.
Don’t get us wrong. We love a good slice of pie too. We just don’t sell it. Why? Because calzones are way better. That’s why! D.P. Dough has been making calzone converts out of adventurous ‘Za lovers – both college students and anyone else who is young at heart – since before slap bracelets were cool.
D.P. Dough calzones are tasty anytime. But, we are best known for being THE PLACE to go or call when it is crazy late. Who else is gonna deliver you a custom made calzone after the bars close? Source
How is the parking?
There is metered street parking just out front of D.P. Dough Charleston. You can download the Park Mobile app if you don’t have coins on hand. Please do not park in the fire lane, not even for what may be a quick to-go order. This is clearly marked for emergencies only, be respectful of traffic laws.
There is garage parking above, in the Summers Street Garage. The entrance is directly beside of the D. P. Dough front door. The garage is free to park in any space on Saturday and Sunday, but has first come first serve metered spots on every floor Mon-Fri. Be sure to not park in the reserved spaces in the garage Mon-Fri. Monthly members pay $80/month to have a reserved spot during the work week. Parking in a reserved space through the week very well may cause you to receive a parking ticket.
My personal experience at D. P. Dough Charleston
Although D. P. Dough just opened last Friday, I have already eaten there on three separate occasions.
Each visit...
- the service has been great, despite having limited staff.
- my food was yummy and everything was prepared correctly.
- I earned some reward points towards my first free calzone.
The to-go boxes are especially nice, because they easily show on top which calzone is inside, if you for instance ordered for multiple people. Every calzone comes with your choice of dipping sauce inside of the box.
I have the benefit of being only a minutes walk to pick up my D. P. Dough orders. I have a feeling I will be a very consistent customer. Let’s see for how much longer I will be able to resist the tempting Oreo milkshake.
