I have been looking forward to today since I and spoke about home-made burgers. He couldn't believe it when I said I've never had burgers. So, we decided to remedy that.
Because of our difference in location, we had a lot if improvising to do especially because of low budget. Also, just to add, I thought the whole bread thingy were burgers. I had no idea that it was the little meatloaf in it that bears the name😑.
For ingredients:
¼ Minced/Ground Beef
1 Red onion
3 Fresh/strong tomatoes
3-4 Table spoons of Butter/vegetable oil
1 cube of Maggi
3 Finger Chillies
1½ table spoon of Curry Masala (in place of mustard)
Lettuce (as preferred)
Bread crumbs (with caution)
½ a cup of Garri (in place of flour. My fellow Nigerians 🙂. How far na? Na Sapa cause am😩)
1 Egg
½ a teaspoon of Black pepper powder
Bread Rolls
PREPARATION
Being my first time, I was excited going to the market at about 9am. After getting all the ingredients, I and Tengo tried voice call but were heavily disappointed! That's it! I'm changing this fluffing phone. I encounter the same issue every time I try to make or accept calls in Discord. 😒
After a lot of breathing exercises to get my blood to simmer down, I had to mince the meat manually. Took a long time. Edward, you're so lucky 😒.
Then i diced the onions to teenyweeny chops and added into the beef. I also did same with the finger chillies.
Then came the bread crumbs. Well, I had to make mine. So just as he showed me, with a grater, I grated some bread into the mix.
Loving it!
I added my maggi and masala, then the egg (without shells 😃). Honestly, I never knew you don't add egg shells with the eggs. I always thought you beat them all together. Thank God for who made me understand 😃. I've been eating poison all my life...😲
Now, getting the hand dirty (please wash your hands before you begin this process), I mash it all up together. Till it's smooth and slimy. Hmmm...
Then came the hard part. Flour would not have been added to the mix, but my burger decided to be meaner and take in a really smooth– too smooth – texture. I guess it felt sexy or something but hey, it still landed in my stomach.
So with no more cash, I improvised using a sieve to sieve out the smooth powder of the garri on top of the squashed burger. Oh yeah, before that, I had to mold the burger into a ball with my hand (how I knew sexy pants was way too soft) and squash it till it was flat. Flaaaaaat😐...like your motherboard😐
Now, came in the self doubt because after heating the butter at moderate heat in the non-stick frying pan and putting the burger, it looked like death! My mind went..."what is this?" But Tengo told me not to worry. Taste is what matters after all. Even if it looked like an assassin straight from the streets, it was okay😁.
So... I tried again and discovered that the gas would automatically increase tempo which lead to the first one looking like botched gone wrong . So I kept monitoring the heat and set a timer of five minutes.
When you put burger in heated oil or butter, you turn to the other side five minutes later (that is ten minutes cooking the burgers). I had to use a timer.
Then after that, I took my bread rolls and under his instructions, i put a strip of lettuce (after washing them of course) and the sliced tomatoes on top, burger after that another slice of tomato and lettuce then finally the top of the bread.
So remember that thing he said about taste? Yeah. I had a foodgasm. It looked like death but oh my God! My little boy was clearly enjoying it as his eyes closed while he chewed. My mom didn't even bother talking, she just ate.
Today was hands down, the best for this week! I enjoyed cooking and eating that burger! Thank you Ed! Why not drop a picture of yours too? 😃
