If you are a Filipino, I bet you are familiar with Turon. For the sake of non-Filipino readers, "Turon" is a Filipino snack usually made of Banana saba rolled in spring roll wrapper then fried. But today, there are several variations of this Filipino snack and one of the latest ones that I have tried is the Sweet Potato Cheese Turon which we first tried at Bung Aw Resort.
To give you a bit of a background, we were on a family trip to Bung Aw Eco Farm Resort in Clarin, Bohol when we ordered some food snacks. We were caught by the items on the menu, specifically the turon. There was the banana turon on the list and yet another turon next to it. Without a doubt, we ordered one. Their turon didn't come with cheese so it was solely sweet potato turon.
When the orders arrived, it was the sweet potato turon that got sold first. Everyone loved it that on the day we checked out of the resort, we ordered a ton to take while on the road.
So, the next day, my sister-in-law made her own version!
First, she steamed some sweet potatoes and mashed them, no added sugar though, I believe it might have been better if there were some sweeteners included! Condensed milk or sugar perhaps?
And then the cheese strips. I then thought this is was a turon and cheese sticks combined together!
Rolling of the ingredients into a spring roll wrapper. A tablespoon of the mashed sweet potato and one single stick of the cheese then rolled like a lumpia.
After everything has been wrapped, it's time to fry these babies. It's should be hot and deep enough for the turon to dive into the oil. This is the secret of a crispy turon!
All done! We have to place them on kitchen tissue paper to take the excess oil out. They made a lot and so I was there waiting for my turn to take a bite! I just have to be extra patient as these are still hot and we don't want to burn our tongue!
Finally, it's now warm, a perfect time to taste test it!
Viola! I love the crispiness and the sweet potato was sweet already, no condensed milk required! We didn't coat the turon with sugar though because this was enough! I love it! I highly suggest and then again, this is always a perfect afternoon snack!
Have you tried this type of turon?
