Merry Christmas Everyone!
I hope you are having a nice break from your usual routine and are able to spend quality time with your family. Today, I had a great time with my mom. Instead of celebrating alone and going out for a nice dinner, I decided to get Korean BBQ at home because my mom is here and it's too crowded to go out. In Indonesia, there are meal kit options where the meat shop will provide seasoning and onions as well. So, it was the perfect option for us instead going outside and dealt with traffic.
I chose beef slices without fat and added a steamboat to our Korean BBQ meal because my mom likes it. I picked the galbi sauce, which has a savory flavor and some sesame seeds, to marinate the meat. It adds a rich flavor to the meat. I don’t have any special grill but I was just using the electric pan that I have. It took a while to grill but we did it!
One of the things I learned from watching Korean movies and shows is that, it is common to wrap the meat in leafy greens, like perilla leaves. In Indonesia, we don't have perilla leaves available, so we used lettuce to wrap our meat. To add some excitement to our Korean BBQ experience, we also cut the meat with scissors, which seems to be how they serve it in Korea.
While having it, I was in charge of grilling the meat while my mom handled the cutting. We served the meat with garlic and had a great time grilling and eating together. We ended up feeling very full and happy. For dessert, we decided to keep it simple and just have a cup of iced coffee and chocolate mint for my mom. It was a fun and satisfying experience. I wish next year we can celebrate it together and have korean BBQ again.
