What do you think about ordering a kid’s meal at a fast food restaurant as an adult?
I never really ask that question until recently I realized most of my fast food orders are always kids meals. Ever since I use food delivery service, I often order kids' meals from fast food restaurants guilt free. But five years ago, I had experience ordering kids' meals on site and the people there, were looking at me whilst I opened the toy from McDonald's Happy Meal. So, since then I never order kids’ meals on site.
Kids' meals are actually a great deal when it comes to fast food. Though sometimes the price isn’t as cheap as other adult menus, when you count the items, it’s actually a great deal. For example, in a Happy meal, you get a toy, a milk or drink of your preference, rice, and chicken for adult size. Meanwhile for an adult size with the same price, you wouldn’t even get free drinks and sometimes the price it’s only for side dishes. So, if you want to save money eating at McDonald's, KFC, or other fast food chain, that’s the trick to get the most of it.
To me, ordering a kid's meal is basically a bit personal. As a kid, I never really had the chance to eat fast food and even collect the toys. So, that’s something I want to do as an adult. By far, I have collected some minion toys from McDonald’s, Marvin the Martian, and now a hand sanitizer with its pouch from yoshinoya which is something I want to review today.
Yoshinoya is a japanese fast food restaurant selling Gyudon. Their menu consists of various rice bowls with beef/chicken teriyaki, japanese soups and desserts. Their price is quite pricey compared to local gyudon and rice bowls. Today, I ordered the kids meal from their menu.
From the picture, it looked quite appetizing, especially that I was expecting to get a sturdy bento box in a cow shape. I was also expecting to get the cute toys from the menu. That was my expectation before the meal arrived.
After the meal arrived, I was quite surprised because I didn’t get any toys. Instead, I only get hand sanitizer with its pouch. So, as you can see below, the meal consists of a plastic bento box, a bottled orange juice, a toy and also cutlery. At the moment, there is a massive discount for food via shoppe food. So, for this box of meals with the toy, I only have to pay 24,000 IDR which is about 1.66$ at the current rate.
The meal box consists of three fried battered chicken with crispy spinach and rice. For a kid's meal menu, this is actually quite nutritious. There’s carbohydrates, vegetables, and protein; except that the milk is missing. I think this meal box would have been perfect if they added milk instead of fruit juices or soda. The portion was quite filling even for adults like myself. So, overall, this was a great value meal.
I personally don’t see anything wrong if you want to order a kids meal menu. But there are people who make morality cases out of it and think that’s unethical. Perhaps, if that was in a restaurant, that would be a different story. In Indonesia, I don’t think people are that fussy about adults ordering kids' meal menus. But I suppose that'd be another story, especially in western countries. Let me know what you think and your experience in the comment section.
