Hi, Foodiiieeeeesss!!! 🥰✨
It's been a while since I last posted a new recipe I've tried at home. I didn't run out of recipes to share with you; I ran out of time to craft a food blog. 😥
Obviously, I don't want to keep you waiting. Here goes another recipe.
But first, storytime! Last July, my friends and I went on a 5-day trip to Eastern Samar. Before our return trip to Cebu, as expected we brought with us bundles of the famous delicacy in Leyte and Samar area, Moron. It's not the moron you're thinking of! 🤣
Moron's main ingredients are glutinous rice and coconut milk. In my few trips to Samar and Leyte for work, I've tried variants of moron. I can only can't on one hand my favorite food and drinks and Moron is definitely one of them. For me, moron paired with a boiling cup of milk for breakfast is the best thing I can wake up to.
The best version of Moron is the one with both chocolates and cheese but for all we know, manufacturers aren't using real chocolates instead they use cocoa powder. But in my recipe today, I used real chocolate compounds. If you're asking how? Get your aprons, we're cooking some sweet and savory Philippine delicacy today!
Ingredients
Moron usually has two components, the white part and the chocolate part. Here are the ingredients:
For the white mixture:
1 1/2 cups rice flour
1/2 cup glutinous rice flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
For the chocolate mixture:
1 1/2 cups rice flour
1/2 cup glutinous rice flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup or more dark chocolate compound/chips (you may use semi-sweet or milk chocolates, too)
1/8 tsp instant coffee powder(optional)
1/8 tsp salt
1 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp butter/margarine(optional)
1/4 cup roasted peanuts, crushed
Cheese
Procedure
[1] First, let us make the milk or the white mixture. Just combine the ingredients listed under the white mixture above. Thoroughly mix all ingredients in a medium size mixing bowl.
[2] Preheat a pan, brush margarine or butter in the heated pan, and while in low heat, add the white mixture combined earlier. Cook this on low to medium fire only.
Keep mixing the batter until it thickens such as the photo below. Don't stop stirring the mixture.
[3] Continue mixing until the mixture becomes thick and dry enough that it will look like cooked dough.
Just like this! Once you achieve this, turn off the flames.
Set it aside in a different container and allow it to cool down.
[4] Now, we've come to the exciting part! If we're using the standard recipe with cocoa powder as the main color and flavor-enhancing ingredient, we'll just basically do Steps 1-3 but since we're using chocolates for this recipe, I tweaked the recipe a bit! 😉
Combine all ingredients in the chocolate mixture listed above except the evaporated milk and the chocolates. Set it aside.
[5] In a preheated pan, add the evaporated milk and the chocolates.
Continuously stir until the chocolates are fully melted.
[6] Once done, add the mixture you set aside earlier. Slowly stir and ensuring both the melted chocolate and the white batter are combined properly.
The same thing should be achieved with the chocolate mixture too. It should completely dry out
Set aside and allow to completely cool down before forming the moron by hand.
[7] While waiting for the chocolate-flavored component of the moron to completely cool down, prepare banana leaves. The recipe I'm following mentioned that the size of the banana leaves is suggested to be 7 inches by 7 inches but I didn't follow this! You can pick your desired size. You can even create Giant Morons because why not? 😁
Wilt the banana leaves in a low fire before using them!
[8] Now it's time to form those morons! Here are some creative ways to design them
Get both chocolate and milk then combine
Either like this...
Or like this...
In my case, I did both! Haha! With the help of my mother, we finished forming and wrapping the moron in the banana leaves.
[9] It's steaming time!
Arrange the wrapped moron instead a steamer. You can use a rice cooker for this, too!
Steam it for 30-45 minutes and you're good!
[10] This is how the morons will look after steaming.
Serve hot and enjoy!
I hope you had fun and learned a new recipe with this new food blog. Let me know if you have questions about this recipe and leave comments if you've tried it! 😋
