With the weather cold and snowy, yet again, we had to turn our attention to a family meal. That means doing one of two things: a) getting the crockpot going early in the day, or b) getting the cast iron out for more stove top fun. This weekend's family food adventure included our trusty cast iron, some ground beef, and broccoli. Easy enough!
The whole meal was predicated on the use of ground beef from our local CSA. There is plenty of savannah raised fat in the ground beef, so no oil was needed when browning up the meat on medium high heat in the cast iron.
We then went to work on a sauce to add to the beef. The sauce was a mix of:
- Oyster sauce
- Honey
- Rice vinegar
- Chicken broth
- Soy sauce
Our sous chef was happy to help out...
I then threw some minced garlic and ginger root in the cast iron, and then added our sauce to the meat:
Then it was time to throw the broccoli on. We cut broccoli pieces into small chunks and added the vegetable to the cast iron. I then brought the sauce to a boil, then put the heat on a low to let simmer until the broccoli cooked through.
Once the broccoli was cooked through, we added a bit corn starch to add some texture, two teaspoons of sesame oil, and then served with green onions and rice. Yum...
Yet another family #foodies adventure in the books! This is an easy one to make, and the dishes weren't too bad for clean up afterwards. I threw a little siracha on the side too, just to add a little heat for a January meal.
Thanks for stopping by to look at another meal. I initially thought our four-year-old daughter wouldn't be into these Sunday night meals, but so far, so good. Maybe she has a little chef in her....
