I have always liked halvah, a kind of soft nougat made with sesame paste or tahini, but I hadn't eaten it for a long time. Last month for my birthday my mom gave me one that comes in a presentation of 454 gr (1 pound), Arabito brand and I bring you this review with my opinion of the product.
Desde siempre me ha gustado el halvá, una especie de turrón suave hecho con pasta de sésamo o tahini, pero hacía tiempo que no lo comía. El mes pasado por mi cumpleaños mi mamá me regaló uno que viene en una presentación de 454 gr (1 libra), de la marca Arabito y les traigo esta reseña con mi opinión del producto.
It's not a very well known dessert, for those who had not heard of it, it is originally from the Middle East and the word halvah or halawa as it is also called, means sweet in Arabic. My family is of Greek origin and they also prepare it there, it is very popular, that's why we have always eaten it, and here in Venezuela you can find it in some stores, especially in those of Syrian or Lebanese owners.
No es un postre muy conocido, para los que no habían escuchado de él, es originario de Oriente Medio y la palabra halvá o halawa como también se le dice, significa dulce en árabe. Mi familia es de origen griego y allá también lo preparan, es muy popular, por eso siempre lo hemos comido, y aquí en Venezuela se consigue en algunas tiendas, sobre todo en las de propietarios sirios o libaneses.
This one in particular from Arabito, name also of several stores and restaurants in Caracas where they sell Arabian gastronomy products, I hadn't tried it. The ones we used to buy at home came in pots with Arabic letters, but I have not seen them anymore.
Este en concreto de Arabito, nombre también de varias tiendas y restaurantes en Caracas donde venden productos de la gastronomía árabe, no lo había probado. Los que comprábamos en mi casa venían en potes con letras en árabe, pero no los he visto más.
I like to detail the ingredients of the products and looking at the label of this halvah I saw something very common nowadays worldwide in the elaboration of processed foods but that I don't like: palm oil, which is not healthy because it has a lot of fat but the industry uses it because it is cheaper and to make preparations yield. In other brands of halvah that I have eaten it is not present and it is not necessary since the sesame paste has its natural oil, which is very beneficial for health, by the way.
Me gusta detallar los ingredientes de los productos y mirando la etiqueta de este halvá vi algo muy común actualmente a nivel mundial en la elaboración de alimentos procesados pero que no me agrada: aceite de palma, el cual no es saludable porque tiene mucha grasa pero la industria lo usa por ser más barato y para hacer rendir las preparaciones. En otras marcas de halvá que he comido no está presente y no hace falta ya que la pasta de ajonjolí tiene su aceite natural, por cierto muy beneficioso para la salud.
Apart from not knowing Arabito's halvah, I had never eaten halvah with pistachios either, I have tried it in its original version without nuts, with cocoa and almonds. Look how tempting the bottom of the bowl looks:
Aparte de no conocer el halvá de Arabito, tampoco había comido halvá con pistachos, lo he probado en su versión original sin frutos secos, con cacao y almendras. Miren lo tentador que luce la parte de abajo del recipiente:
Now I opened it and it looked very appetizing! It also had a divine aroma.
Ahora sí, lo abrí y ¡se veía muy apetitoso! Además con un aroma divino.
I cut a good piece and I liked its texture, compact as it should be and without oil residues.
Corté un buen pedazo y me gustó su textura, compacta como debe ser y sin restos de aceite.
I do have to say that I was disappointed that the pistachios are only on the edges, they are not mixed inside.
Sí debo decir que me decepcionó que los pistachos sólo están en los bordes, no se encuentran mezclados adentro.
As for its flavor I found the taste of the sesame paste less intense compared to other brands I have tried, perhaps because they add palm oil, but the combination with the pistachio is good. I give it a rating 8 out of 10 😉.
En cuanto a su sabor me pareció menos intenso el gusto de la pasta de ajonjolí en comparación con otras marcas que he probado, quizás porque le añaden aceite de palma, pero la combinación con el pistacho es buena. Le doy una calificación 8 de 10 😉.
The halvah is usually quite sweet, almost cloying, so it is served in small portions. Since I have a tolerance for sugar I serve myself two with no problem 😜.
El halvá suele ser bastante dulce, casi empalagoso, por lo que se sirve en pequeñas porciones. Como tengo tolerancia al azúcar yo me sirvo dos sin problemas 😜.
