Do you know what Breadfruit is?
Breadfruit is a staple across Polynesia and in the Caribbean. It is gluten free and packed with nutrients and it is extremely versatile. It was one of several “super foods” in ancient times. It can be cooked and prepared just like a potato but it's alot more nutritious.
Today the last breadfruit fell off my tree so I decided to take the opportunity to make breadfruit chips. It's one of my favourite things to eat and it's super easy to make.
This is the last breadfruit from my tree. It's really small and still very young But it's perfect to make breadfruit chips.
I first peel and cut the breadfruit into small slices.
Then I put a frying pan on the stove and pour enough oil to cover the base of the pan. Before placing the breadfruit in the pan I wait until small bubbles appear in the pan to ensure the oil is hot enough. To make sure I normally take one piece and hold it in the oil if it makes the crackling sound and more bubbles form when it touches the oil then I know it's hot enough. I then carefully put the sliced breadfruit into the pan and let it fry until it's crispy and has a golden brown colour.
While it's frying I prep another bowl with some paper towels. I then removed the breadfruit from the oil and placed them into the bowl with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Then I added some salt to taste.
I like to eat it with just some ketchup and KFC pepper sauce which I always save for the sole purpose of accompanying my breadfruit chips. But if you wanna give it a try you can also add mustard, garlic sauce or any condiments you like. You can also have breadfruit chips as an alternative to fries with any meal you'd generally have chips with.
It's super yummy. Leave me a comment and let me know if you try it. Or if you know of any other ways to make breadfruit its such a versatile starch.
Happy cooking 😁
