What is Jeongwol Daeboreum?
Jeongwol Daeboreum celebrates the first full moon of the lunar new year (January 15th on the lunar calendar). Historically, it was one of the most important holidays in Korea, even more so than New Year's Day, as people gathered to pray for a bountiful harvest and good health.
Key Traditions & Foods
- Ogok-bap (Five-Grain Rice): A mix of rice, millet, sorghum, beans, and red beans. Sharing this with neighbors is believed to bring good luck.
- Bureom (Nut Cracking): People crack open hard-shelled nuts (like walnuts or peanuts) with their teeth to prevent skin diseases and strengthen teeth for the year.
- Jwinbul-nori: A traditional game where people spin cans filled with fire to burn away pests in the fields and wish for a healthy crop.
- Selling the Heat (Deowi-palgi): On this morning, you try to "sell" your summer heat to a friend by calling their name and saying "Take my heat!" before they can respond.
The Meaning
In agricultural times, the moon symbolized fertility and abundance. By celebrating the first full moon, Koreans reinforced community bonds and warded off bad luck for the coming months.
