Luka era el miembro más joven de la tripulación, y esta era la primera vez que iba a participar en una misión de campo ayudando a explorar la superficie de un planeta alienígena.
Unos pequeños parches de tierra mostraban evidencia de tundra o desierto, pero la mayor parte del planeta parecía un paraíso tropical. "Esto es increíble", dijo. "Creo que hemos encontrado un lugar capaz de sostener la vida".
Habían estado viajando durante días, y Luka no podía creer lo rápido que estaban llegando allí. Habían pasado gran parte de su tiempo mirando el paisaje a medida que pasaba, maravillándose de las vistas. Todos estaban agotados por la falta de sueño, pero ninguno de ellos quería perderse nada de esto.
Estaban absolutamente sorprendidos por finalmente ver esta esfera azul brillante a una distancia muy corta. Era más grande que el planeta Tierra, y sospechaban que también era más antiguo. Los científicos a bordo de la nave no estaban seguros de si el objeto era un asteroide o algún tipo de satélite artificial, por lo que decidieron investigar más a fondo. Bajaron el transbordador a un lado del gran objeto, luego instalaron una serie de sondas y centinelas alrededor del área.
Después de un tiempo, llegó un mensaje de la sonda, indicando que el objeto era realmente artificial. Cuando examinaron la superficie, descubrieron varias estructuras alienígenas completamente abandonadas.
La primera estructura era muy similar a una casa, solo que era mucho más pequeña y de aspecto más delicado. Había cuatro habitaciones diferentes, cada una de unos veinte metros cuadrados, conectadas por túneles. Cada habitación contenía una mesa y sillas, y las paredes estaban hechas de vidrio. En una esquina de la habitación, había un dispositivo que aparentemente era una especie de centro de entretenimiento, con muchas pantallas que mostraban imágenes y videos. Le recordó a Luka la computadora de su casa, excepto que esta era mucho más grande. También había una puerta que conducía al exterior.
En otra habitación, encontraron una gran plataforma circular rodeada por una compleja red de tuberías y tubos. En su centro había un gran tanque que contenía una gran bola negra. El tanque se llenaba de agua y el agua se drenaba una vez al día, dejando la bola negra flotando en el tanque. Mientras observaban, la bola negra comenzó a moverse, elevándose lentamente por encima del nivel del agua hasta que llegó a la parte superior del tanque. Luego dejó de moverse y flotó inmóvil.
Luego encontraron una tercera estructura. Esta tenía forma de pirámide, y tenía dos torres altas en cada extremo. No había señales de puertas o ventanas y parecía un lugar muy místico.
También había una cuarta estructura, que estaba hecha de hormigón y se parecía a un pequeño edificio. Dentro de la estructura, encontraron una gran ventana rectangular que daba al océano.
Todas estas estructuras estaban conectadas por túneles, algunos de los cuales corrían bajo tierra. Después de examinar las estructuras, los científicos concluyeron que todas eran obviamente artificiales, construidas por una o varias personas que vivían aquí, pero parecían vacías como si faltaran elementos y artefactos clave.
"¿A dónde fueron?" Preguntó Luka.
"No lo sé, pero desearía saberlo", dijo el Dr. García. "Dejaron todo atrás".
"¿Quiénes eran? ¿Dónde viven ahora?" Preguntó Luka.
El Dr. García suspiró. "Todavía no sabemos nada. Vamos a tratar de averiguarlo, pero puede que nunca lo sepamos. Es una lástima, porque me encantaría conocerlos".
Luka miró hacia el cielo, que ahora estaba completamente oscuro. Las estrellas salían, brillando intensamente en el cielo nocturno. "Si se van, ¿por qué no se llevaron sus cosas con ellos?"
Luka was the younger member of the crew, and this was the first time he was going to participate in a field mission by helping explore the surface of an alien planet.
A few small patches of land showed evidence of tundra or desert, but most of the planet looked like a tropical paradise. "This is incredible," he said. "I think we've found a place capable of sustaining life."
They had been traveling for days, and Luka couldn't believe how fast they were getting there. They had spent much of their time just staring at the scenery as it passed by, marveling at the sights. They were all exhausted from lack of sleep, but none of them wanted to miss any of this.
They were absolutely amazed for finally seeing this bright blue sphere at a very short distance. It was larger than the planet Earth, and they suspected it was also older. The scientists aboard the ship were not sure if the object was an asteroid or some sort of artificial satellite, so they decided to investigate further. They brought the shuttle down on one side of the large object, then set up a series of probes and sentries around the area.
After a while, a message came through from the probe, indicating that the object was indeed artificial. When they examined the surface, they discovered several alien structures completely abandoned.
The first structure was very similar to a house, only it was a lot smaller and more delicate-looking. There were four different rooms, each about twenty square meters, connected by tunnels. Each room contained a table and chairs, and the walls were made out of glass. In one corner of the room, there was a device that was apparently some sort of entertainment center, with many screens showing images and videos. It reminded Luka of his home computer, except this one was much bigger. There was also a door leading outside.
In another room, they found a large circular platform surrounded by a complex network of pipes and tubes. At its center was a large tank containing a large black ball. The tank was filled with water, and the water was drained away once a day, leaving the black ball floating in the tank. As they watched, the black ball began to move, slowly rising above the water level until it reached the top of the tank. Then it stopped moving and floated motionless.
Then they found a third structure. This one was shaped like a pyramid, and it had two tall towers at either end. There was no sign of any doors or windows and it seemed like a very mystical place.
There was also a fourth structure, which was made of concrete and resembled a small building. Inside the structure, they found a large rectangular window looking out onto the ocean.
All of these structures were connected by tunnels, some of which ran underground. After examining the structures, the scientists concluded that they were all obviously artificial, built by someone or some people who lived here but they seemed empty as if key items and artifacts were missing
"Where did they go?" Luka asked.
"I don't know but I wish I knew" Dr. Garcia said. "They left everything behind."
"Who were they? Where do they live now?" Luka asked.
Dr. Garcia sighed. "We don't know anything yet. We're going to try to find out, but we may never know. It's too bad, because I would love to meet them."
Luka looked back at the sky, which was now completely dark. The stars were coming out, shining brightly in the night sky. "If they leave, why didn't they take their stuff with them?"

"Claro. ¿Por qué no? Eso es lo que hicimos en el pasado".
La conversación terminó, y ambos se quedaron con muchos pensamientos sobre la naturaleza de los seres que vivían en este lugar. Encontrar un planeta vacío que una vez sirvió como hogar para una civilización no es algo que sucedió todos los días.
A la mañana siguiente, el transbordador despegó y se dirigió de regreso hacia la nave. Luka miró por la ventana mientras el planeta se hacía cada vez más pequeño. Se preguntó cuántos años pasarían antes de que regresaran.
El viaje de regreso a la nave tomó varias horas. La tripulación estaba emocionada de ver que las estructuras alienígenas habían sido despojadas de su tecnología, y especularon sobre lo que significaba.
"Tal vez los extraterrestres se sintieron amenazados por nosotros", sugirió el Dr. García. "Temían que robáramos sus secretos, por lo que retiraron los artículos que consideraban valiosos".
"O tal vez no confiaban en nosotros", agregó el Dr. Potter. "Tal vez pensaron que haríamos un mal uso de su equipo, por lo que lo ocultaron o tal vez incluso lo destruyeron antes de que llegáramos".
"O tal vez simplemente estaban siendo cautelosos", dijo el Dr. García. "Probablemente no quieran entregar sus secretos a todos".
"¿Estás sugiriendo que estaban ocultando algo?" Luka preguntó.
"Sí. Pero tal vez no estaban listos para compartir sus conocimientos con nosotros".
"¿Por qué lo ocultarían?" Preguntó Luka.
"Porque pueden haber tenido miedo de que lo usáramos en su contra".
Esta frase hizo que Luka se diera cuenta de cómo las civilizaciones menos avanzadas podían verlos si notaban que se acercaban. A pesar de que no eran hostiles, tendría sentido tomar precauciones extremas para evitar cualquier tipo de conflicto.
Toda la misión fue una experiencia muy esclarecedora para Luka, quien literalmente estaba cumpliendo su sueño de convertirse en un explorador espacial.
"They had a good level of sophistication, that's for sure," Luka said. "That pyramid is pretty big, and the pyramid was designed to hold a lot of people in. I wish we could go inside."
"Me too, but I don't think we can do that, at least not today." Dr. Garcia said.
"They were all alone here, right? Maybe they were trying to keep it that way. Maybe they don't want to invite other races to come here, because they fear they'll bring trouble. Or maybe they think they can build their own space civilization without anyone else."
"You mean they want to be independent and isolated from everyone else?"
"Sure. Why not? That's what we did in the past."
The conversation ended, and both of them were left with a lot of thoughts regarding the nature of the beings who lived in this place. Finding an empty planet that once serve as home for a civilization isn't something that happened everyday.
The next morning, the shuttle lifted off and headed back toward the ship. Luka stared out the window as the planet grew smaller and smaller. He wondered how many years it would take before they got back.
The trip back to the ship took several hours. The crew was excited to see that the alien structures had been stripped clean of their technology, and they speculated on what it meant.
"Perhaps the aliens felt threatened by us," Dr. Garcia suggested. "They feared that we would steal their secrets, so they removed the items they considered valuable."
"Or perhaps they didn't trust us," Dr. Potter added . "Maybe they thought we would misuse their equipment, so they hid it or maybe even destroyed it before we arrived."
"Or maybe they were simply being cautious," Dr. Garcia said. "They probably don't want to give up their secrets to everyone."
"Are you suggesting they were hiding something?" Luka asked .
"Yes. But maybe they weren't ready to share their knowledge with us."
"Why would they hide it?" Luka asked.
"Because they may have been afraid that we would use it against them."
This phrase made Luka realize how less advanced civilizations could see them if they noticed they were approaching. Even though they weren't hostile, it would make sense to take extreme precautions to avoid any type of conflict.
The entire mission was a very enlightening experience for Luka, who was literally fulfilling his dream of becoming a space explorer.
