Hello Hive artists, I'm back with one more animal anatomy tutorial and today I'm going to show you how to make a butterfly, in an easy, fast and beautiful way. I hope you like it a lot, here are the steps.
PROCESO // PROCESS
We will start by making a square on the sheet, which we will divide in half vertically. After this, we make a point below the middle, which will help us to place the following lines. Our guide should look like this:
Las alas superiores las haremos largas con terminación de hoja.
Las de en medio, serán un poco más pequeñas y circulares.
Las inferiores, tendrán forma de triángulo, pero, haremos líneas irregulares al finalizar para darles textura.
These lines will help us a lot when making the wings so that they are as symmetrical as possible.
We will start drawing the body of the butterfly, which is basically formed by a little ball for the head and an oval for the body. The wings, on the other hand, are like tree leaves with some modifications:
- The upper wings we will make them long with leaf termination.
- The middle ones will be a little smaller and circular.
- The lower ones will have a triangle shape, but we will make irregular lines at the end to give them texture.
It's time to detail and here you must let your imagination fly, because you can add literally whatever you want to the butterfly wings, remember that it's your drawing!
In my case, I went with a very traditional butterfly style and added a few simple details including circles, a kind of "petals" and curved lines.
When coloring, I recommend using colors of the same or similar range to create a kind of beautiful gradient. In my case, I used shades of blue, aquamarine and green, because I like the contrast and it is eye-catching.
You can use any colors you want and even mix base colors with complementary ones, which will also give a very nice and striking result to your illustration.
Everything looks nicer if it is outlined, and for me, this is the best step. I used a fine tip Sharpie for this and the details I gave were very simple, as I just wanted to give it some texture and realism.
Something I forgot to mention before, is that I used oil markers to color the butterfly and I helped myself a little with colored pencils. I really like to combine techniques because the use of several of them helps the illustration to have a better finish.
