Eight is my lucky number, and triple eights, 888, is triple lucky. I am always on the lookout for year dates with the number eight and I've been collecting these coins!
I got this one from Spain, along with two other coins, which I will show in the next article on precious metals.
1888 Spain 5 Pesetas Alfonso XIII (1st portrait)
The coin is sometimes referred to as 1888 Alfonso XIII "Pelón" Spanish Silver 5 Pesetas, "Pelón" meaning bald.
It shows the toddler bust of Alfonso XIII, with lettering around in Latin which translate to "Alfonso XIII by the grace of God."
The reverse is a crowned coat of arms between two columns- the Pillars of Hercules. The lettering, also in Latin, translates to "Constitutional king of Spain, further beyond."
Symbolism and Exploration:
The Pillars of Hercules have long symbolized the limits of the known world, marking the entrance to the Mediterranean.
Spanish explorers, driven by curiosity and ambition, ventured beyond these pillars to explore new lands.
The motto “Plus Ultra” (Latin for “further beyond”) associated with the pillars reflects this spirit of exploration. Source
The edge has fleur-de-lys all around.
These are the selling prices of the 1888 Spain 5 Pesetas sold lately.
Watch Alfonso go down the slide!
