I got my third platinum trophy on PS5
My PlayStation 5 and my new TV have been making me feel like one spoiled gamer here lately. I just completed my third game since getting my PS5 on launch day (Nov 12). I gave a quirky new game called Bugsnax a try, mostly because it was/is free with PS Plus (until Jan 4th). To my surprise I ended up getting hooked and achieving 100% completion to unlock the platinum trophy.
This now makes it three games in a row that I have played on my PS5 which I have been awarded the platinum trophies for. I began my PS5 journey with completing Astro’s Playroom and then I moved on to 100%-ing God of War. Both of those games were very high quality and felt worth my time. Bugsnax too was an experience that I was happy to have played, albeit at a much lower production level.
The best way I can describe Bugsnax is with the following traits:
- Pokémon Snap with free roam (no leveling up or battling like in regular Pokémon games).
- A kid friendly Monster Hunter with playful trapping and boss battles (but not for kids only).
- Silly and colorful Bugsnax (similar to Viva Piñata’s palette) which you collect and are a combination of familiar bugs with popular foods.
My Video
Just like the previous two PS5 games I completed, I have taken the time to create a video showcasing all of my trophy unlocks in Bugsnax. I love the new feature on PS5 that automatically records 30 seconds surrounding each trophy unlock. I’ve found that combining that luxury with SHAREFactory has allowed me to enjoy creating videos with my gameplay without having to focus on it throughout my playthroughs.
Check out my Bugsnax highlight video and you will get a better understanding of what this game is like.
Much like my video, the game started kind of slow, but eventually I was unleashed and able to start capturing a plethora of extremely clever Bugsnax. It even got so difficult at points that I had to rely on guides such as this one and this one to figure out how to capture certain Bugsnax.
Bugsnax is pretty darn cool for a free game
The goal of Bugsnax is to find the lost mayor of Snaxburg who is somewhere within the 9 different biomes that house a variety of Bugsnax totaling at 100. To do that, you must bring all of the Grumpus stationed somewhere on Snacktooth Island back to Snaxburg, which involves traveling throughout the different regions and convincing them to come home by completing tasks. The tasks generally involve unlocking a new tool that will enable you to catch a particular Bugsnax. After you get that tool, you will then be more capable of catching all of the other Bugsnax you see scattered about living their lives.
The story wasn’t something I listened to closely, in fact I chose to skip all of the talk as quickly as possible and just focus on playing the game to completion. The gotta catch em’ all feeling was something that struck me almost immediately. There were so many memorable Bugsnax such as the Oreo spider Kwookie, the flying pizza monster Mothza Supreme, or the cinnamon roll snail Cinnasnail. You will surely have a memory of each one you come across as they are very creative and all of them say their name in these funny little voices each time you come up to their area.
The gameplay breaks down to this:
- Scan the Bugsnax with your camera to learn it’s trail and habits.
- Open your varied toolkit to come up with an idea on how to catch these tricky Bugsnax.
- Once you’ve caught the Bugsnax you will be feeding them to the Grumpus and then customizing the way each character looks.
You may have a Grumpus made of a burger and French fries or an ice cream sundae with bananas and a cherry. The combinations are pretty endless and luckily towards the end of the game you unlock the ability to switch around the way a character looks without having to feed them. You just rely on the things you have already fed them at least once, which makes it simple to make a character look exactly how you want.
The Bugsnax themselves are the coolest part of this game
Out of everything I experienced during my 7 hours with Bugsnax, I think the Bugsnax themselves were definitely the best part. I’m a pretty creative person and like the idea of combining two interesting things such as food and bugs. I played Pokémon a lot growing up and enjoyed it so much for the designs of the Pokémon and the sounds they made. The same goes for Bugsnax. The Bugsnax sounds coming out of my DualSense controller never got old and I found myself being genuinely excited to discover the next yummy catch.
Speaking of the sound let me just say that the music for this game is freaking awesome! There were so many very catchy tunes that although simple, were great to have playing throughout my journey.
Your inner child begs you to play Bugsnax
I went from playing God of War to Bugsnax, two totally opposite games. Blood and gore to cute and childish. Sometimes that’s what we need, just a fun way to kick back and relax to feel like a kid again. Bugsnax can provide that feeling as well as some difficult challenges when it comes to catching the puzzling Bugsnax on Snacktooth Island.
Bugsnax is not perfect, there are a few technical bugs that caused me to have to reload my save. That is to be expected from a free game with the word bug in it’s name. I was always able to continue on through the game luckily, so none are gamebreakers. If you’re like me and already spent $500 on a PS5 and $1,000 on a TV, then a game that launched as a free option to the PS5 is a great choice. This and Astro’s Playroom both I consider to be worth playing.
Thanks for checking out my blog and video!
I hope you were both entertained and informed my by work. Good luck on getting a PS5 if you’re searching and if you already have one maybe download Bugsnax and have some childish fun.
