One thing as an Indonesian is that I am not accustomed to tipping. However, in recent years many cafes provide a tipping jar for patrons to leave something. But when living in Bali, tipping seems to be the custom. Perhaps I am wrong but I still don’t know what is the appropriate tipping. I usually round up my bill or leave 5000 or 10000 if the food and service was outstanding. Today, for example, I went to a place called Moana Fish Eatery. Their main cuisine consists of fish, raw and grilled. I got ere-ere mahi which was amazing. Their martini espresso was the same too. However, alcohol and caffeine triggered my reflux badly. One of the customers came up to me and asked why I didn’t finish the martini. I told him that I just wanted to taste it. Unlike in Yogyakarta, they don’t generally ask you if there’s something wrong or if you like the food. Here, the hospitality and the service is amazing. They care about the waiters and that’s why I don’t hesitate tipping them even if the service is included. Do you also tip even when the service fee is included? Is it only an American custom? I want to know how tipping works in your country!
