It's now July. After six months of managing my Diabetes since January, I feel I'm headed in the right direction to accomplish my goal.
First, it's time to check my progress for the past six months.
The first step I took was to chart my A1C levels monthly. Below is my chart for January through June:
| MONTH | A1C Level | +/- CHANGE IN POINTS | IMPROVEMENT TO DATE (points) |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 163 | - 0 [Starting Point] | 0 |
| February | 137 | -26 | 26 |
| March | 96 | -41 | 67 |
| April | 102 | +6 | 61 |
| May | 99 | -3 | 64 |
| June | 137 | +38 | 26 |
| July | 127 | -10 | 36 |
I can't believe I was so busy two days ago that I forgot to check my A1C level on July 1, 2020. When I finally checked it, my number was 127. My doctor warned that my A1C level would rise significantly with any illness. During the months of May and June, I experienced another severe sinus infection.
I'm happy that I'm at least on the right track in terms of lowering my A1C monthly as planned. Reducing my level 10 points from last month. Reducing my A1C level even 36 points overall since January is still a major accomplishment.
However, I know from experience this past year that any prolonged illness or steroid injection can wipe out any progress I make. So I just have to be careful with minor illnesses occurring. I'm still battling through that sinus infection.
My doctor warned me that I have to be especially careful during this COVID19 crisis. Learning that my underlying health conditions that include Diabetes can greatly increase my risk of infection from this virus, I have opted to remain indoors.
On May 1st, our state issued orders to officially begin re-opening the economy. Nearly all businesses had been allowed to reopen. Due to the steady rise in COVID-19 cases to the critical mark for our State since reopening, orders and procedures had to be re-instated. Many non-essential business are now closed again. Two days ago, the governor of our State declared a state-wide order making it mandatory to wear masks in public. Also, business are not allowed to grant entry to anyone not wearing a mask. These businesses that don't follow the rules to protect all their patrons will suffer penalties. The public beaches and other facilities have closed again.
As of today over 2,838,678 Americans have been infected with COVID-19, and over 129,672 have lost their lives.1 This pandemic is not going away because there is no cure or vaccine yet. Predictions are that these numbers will rise significantly higher. With millions of Americans yet to be tested, out in the general public other than for doctors' appointments, is no place for me in the mix of individuals who refuse to practice social distancing or wear masks and gloves.
But my primary concern for the month of July is staying active while staying at home these additional few months. To address this issue, I have devised some interesting alternatives. I'll talk about those later.
Meanwhile, I'm having for dinner today chicken alfredo with angel hair pasta, salad, and my favorite garlic breadstick.
Thanks for accompanying me on this journey.
See you in August.
