For the last couple of months I have been getting more and more into the homegrowing of food as you can read in this post about snaps and pods and also in this one about paksoi growing while I am using this growing app compensating for my lack of skills.
The good thing about these seasonabl veggies is that when a veggie finishes growing, it is also time to plant something new and different because the season is also changing. That way year round there is somethng nice to eat.
Now ofcourse I had these snaps and pods that were a real addition to cooking in a wok Asian style, and I must say growing beans is extremely rewarding so that is why I had already planted something beanish again because they harvest into endlessness.
So I planted some stringbeans less than a month ago while the snaps were skills growing so there will not be that long of a phase without beans.
Grpwing these guys is actually the must fun because the seed of a been has a nice shell of reserves for the seed to instantly start growing.
The top picture above here was after like 2 days with the spout rising above the soil already.
This picture here is from the sprout after literally a week when it is already makes leaves and you still see the remains of the bean itself from where the plant started growing.
The biggest challenge
The biggest challenge of growing these guys is that they grow so fast that you have to keep them in place before they end up everywhere.
Especially in the beginning they are not that thick yet, but already quite tall which means a big blow of wind of a splash of rain can knock them over already.
I kind of braided them in between the growing net so that they would have a direction of growing up and that only took like a week or so for them to stabilize themselves onto the net.
As you can see here they went in full tangle modus around the net and I think the next challenge will be to get them out once the plant is done growing.
Until now they still only have grown up only and right about now according to the app they should start to develop some flowers in there.
Luckily flowers don't take that long here as I have a gigantic bush of blackberries with flowers in there and bees flying all over, so the pollination of the flowers is literally the least of my worries.
You can also see the tomato bush in the background of the picture and I am always a bit afraid that the stringbeans will tangle up towards the tomato bush and strangle the branches, as it has done that a couple of times already.
But I guess it won't take that long anymore before the plant will start to produce some food again and I am looking foward to it
Spinach
I think this week will be the last week of me harvesting the spinach which has made some nice stuff over there. The leaves where strong and tastful and they have grown very decent over the last couple of weeks.
Spinach was also rewarding. Use it on a sandwich as a sort of lettuce, toss it into the pasta, toss it into the wok. It feels usefull for everything and that is why it is good to have a bush around.
I think I am mastering this homegrowing skill guys and I feel proud of it!
