Greetings all
It feels as if time is flying too fast and I'm not getting much time to do what I want when I want. I ended up writing a little more on Fledgling, but it was maybe a page before work obligations and social norms pulled me away from my computer.
Oh well, such is life. At least Fell Dragon is done and all I have to do is give updates twice a week. Talking of, enjoy this update!
Jethron felt a little panicky as he watched everyone else leave the room. Once they had left, King Brucel joined his mother.
“You called, Mother?”
“We need to address what happened.” Was all she said.
“I see.” He sat next to his Dekai brother.
“Lardan!” said Saasha sharply.
The General entered the room and following after him was the old Captain. The twang of regret echoed in Saasha’s heart, but she kept it under control as her eldest sat next to her and Brucel was left standing. The man had the gall to look her in the face, making the hurt so much worse.
“Close the door.” She told him.
He did as he was instructed and returned to where he was standing.
“These are my sons.” Said Saasha as she got to her feet. “I welcomed the Kai and Dekai to my council. Can you live with that?”
Brucel thought this over before saying, “What if I say no? Will you exile me?”
“I have no right to, and I don’t think my heart would survive that.” Saasha admitted, “However, it hurts too much to look at you, and while I want to say it is because of what you did, we both know that’s not the truth.”
The room was dead silent.
“I cannot force you to stay here, but I don’t want you to go.” Whispered the queen. “But you are a risk to my family and what I have worked so hard to build these past few decades.”
“What do you propose?” asked her old partner.
“I have taught the human girl all I can and soon she will return to the ruling humans. While she will have Bolx with her, I don’t think it is enough. I cannot risk sending anyone of importance to help guard her. Allow me to use you as the Guard you once were.”
Brucel’s throat was dry. He wanted to scream his feelings at this woman, but he knew she was holding back on her own mirrored feelings. This wasn’t his time. This wasn’t his Saasha, and she never would be. However, he could at least be useful to her once more. It was very little, but it was a balm to his injured soul. He looked at the blacked scar on the palm of his right hand. He had made a promise and he intended to keep it.
“Only because you are my blood brother.” He said. “I will do it for that reason only.”
“That is all I can hope for.” Said Saasha sadly. “I will have Lardan brief you on the details as I am sure seeing me is as painful for you as it is for me to see you.”
The male Saith dropped his gaze as the queen moved passed him, trying not to look at him. He waited until he heard the door open and close before he looked up at the three men before him. These were the Brucel of this time’s sons, each powerful in their own right. The eldest, the General of the Royal Guard to the queen, the second born the King of the secondary plant, and finally the adopted son, a King as well.
Brucel felt bile rise in his throat as he looked at his Dekai son and wasn’t sure if it was hatred or regret.
“What would you three have of me?”
Bolx knew that Saita wasn’t in a good place as they returned to her home. She was muttering under her breath the whole trip back and look furious. He didn’t know what to do or say. He had never liked Edzeeker, and the fact that he had managed to almost destroy two of his loves, he was only too happy that the Dekai had finally managed to get his comeuppance.
Once they were back in the home, Saita turned to him and said, “I’m sorry, but would you mind leaving. I’m not going to be good company.”
Bolx shook his head and said, “No.”
“What do you mean no!”
“I’ll give you the space you want, but I am not going to leave you alone to deal with all of this. I’ll be sitting quietly in the sunning room and when you’re ready to join me, please do.”
He then picked up a book from one of the tables he had been reading a few weeks ago and made his way to the sunning room. As he was making himself comfortable amongst the blankets and pillows, he heard Saita slam a door and then scream into a pillow. He couldn’t help but grin, the temper tantrums were the same.
He opened the book and started reading, but after a few minutes of reading the same sentence over and over, he realised he was too distracted to concentrate on what was before him. He let the book fall open on his lap and he stared out into the garden. When was it that he first met Edzeeker? It must have been about a year after he revealed his feelings to Kaiden, soon after she shared her intentions for him with her newly adopted family.
He remembered how awkward it had been to stand before Myla and Karesh as Kaiden told them exactly why she had wanted him. The more embarrassed he and Karesh got; the more Myla grinned at her chosen daughter. She had known for years what had been blooming in Kaiden’s heart but had allowed her to figure it out herself.
When Karesh had asked about marriage both Bolx and Kaiden had baulked. Bolx never understood why Kaiden had refused, but for him it was simply the fact that he had not yet dealt with the death of his family. While the two of them had managed to keep their relationship partially secret for a year, there were already mutterings of a Saith and human alliance through the two of them wedding.
“Perhaps that’s why you never wanted to wed me in the beginning.” He chuckled. “You didn’t want us to be used as a political ploy by both sides.”
He then frowned, “Then the damn Dekai showed up.”
It couldn’t have been more than three years before he was forced to come to this time when the Dekai came to the castle. While Bolx had never met a Dekai before, he knew of them and the dealings his people had had with them. They were a mysterious species that used lifeforce in odd ways. Bolx had once heard a human refer to them as magicians, a term he didn’t understand, even in all his time spent with humans.
Bolx and Kaiden had just returned from a meeting on Saith, and finally telling Lardan about their relationship. The Saith king hadn’t been surprised and simply said, “Why do you think I never called you back although it’s been almost a year? It was obvious what you were planning when you asked to return to the humans. This does mean that I will have to find another General, as it would seem you need more of an ambassador role. Is that alright Uncle?”
“Thank you.” Was all Bolx could say, amazed at the acceptance that had been shown.
Now they were back in the human castle, staring at the winged alien that had arrived soon after them. Kaiden immediately caught his attention, and he couldn’t help staring at her. The woman glared back at him and said, “It’s not customary to stare at people on this planet.”
Jumping time again, and this is when Edzeeker met Kaiden for the first time.
