Sobre acoso sexual y encubrimiento
This was another one of the recently released movies that was on my watch list. I think we all love a good investigation, especially when it uncovers a network of deviant practices and policies that seeks at all costs to keep the world largely ignorant. That's why I like movies like Spotlight, or Dark Waters so much, because there are people who fight to give a voice to those who don't have one.
Esta era otra de las películas recientemente estrenadas que estaba en mi lista para ver. Creo que a todos nos gusta una buena investigación, sobre todo cuando se descubre una red de prácticas y políticas desviadas que a toda costa busca mantener al mundo en gran ignorancia. Por eso me gustan tanto las películas como Spotlight, o Dark Waters, porque existen personas que luchan por darle una voz a los que no la tienen.
Directed by Maria Schrader, from a script by Rebecca Lenkiewicz and starring Zoe Kazan, Patricia Clarkson and Carey Mulligan, She said is a story that had to be told and since it couldn't be any different, it had to be done by a talented group of women. Weinstein was the co-founder of the production company Miramax, the company in charge of producing big movies like Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love, for which Weinstein won an Oscar; In addition, he also won awards and was successful in theater and musical productions. That is to say, he is one of the most powerful men in the Hollywood industry in recent years. And just like the powerful, Weinstein felt untouchable, above the law. His position and his money protected him from any scandal that might involve him. And so it was for decades, until an investigation by two New York Times journalists, Jodi Kantor (Kazan) and Megan Twohey (Mulligan) brought the truth to light.

La película expone todo lo que fue el escándalo sobre Harvey Weinstein en 2017 en el marco del cual se le acusó de abuso y acoso sexual a varias mujeres. Weinstein fue el co fundador de la productora Miramax, la empresa encargada de producir grandes películas como Pulp Fiction y Shakespeare in Love, por la cual Weinstein obtuvo un Oscar; además también obtuvo premios y tuvo éxito en teatro y producciones musicales. Es decir, se trata de uno de los hombres más poderosos en la industria de Hollywood durante los últimos años. Y tal como ocurre con los poderosos, Weinstein se sentía intocable, por encima de la ley. Su posición y su dinero le protegían de cualquier escándalo que pudiera involucrarlo. When a woman who seeks a career in the world of entertainment, cinema, modeling, music, is forced to have sexual relations with a producer to obtain support, a favor, or even an opportunity to fulfill her dreams, in Latin America we call it Operation Mattress and although the name is creative and some find it amusing and use it lightly, it is full-blown filth and sexual abuse that should be openly denounced.
Cuando una mujer que busca hacer carrera en el mundo del espectáculo, cine, modelaje, música, se ve obligada a tener relaciones sexuales con un productor para obtener apoyo, un favor, o tan siquiera una oportunidad de cumplir sus sueños, en Latinoamerica lo llamamos Operación Colchón y aunque el nombre sea creativo y a algunos les divierta y lo usen a la ligera, se trata de una bajeza y un abuso sexual en toda regla que debería poder denunciarse abiertamente.
Worst of all, in the past there were two things that helped propagate the practice: normalization and silence. Since most of the directors, producers and people of power in the industry were men, they took advantage of that circumstance to abuse young women with dreams. We have heard a thousand stories, in movies and even novels, and for many years even the victims themselves came to think "It's normal", "It's the only way", "It's what they all do". Well, finally, and thanks to the tenacity and dedication of these two journalists, masterfully portrayed on the big screen, this situation could be openly denounced. It's the same thing reported in Bombshell, another story that also exposes sexual abuse and harassment of women in the industry. Although, shocking as it may be, it must be said, it is not only about the film industry or showbizz, this type of behavior is repeated in other spheres such as politics, for example, or in any managerial position that gives power to a man without values who be able to take advantage of that before a woman who needs his favors.
Lo peor de todo es que en el pasado hubo dos cosas que ayudaron a propagar la práctica: la normalización y el silencio. Como la mayoría de los directores, productores y personas de poder en la industria eran hombres, se aprovechaban de esa circunstancia para abusar de mujeres jóvenes y con sueños. Hemos oído mil historias, en películas e incluso novelas y durante muchos años incluso las mismas víctimas llegaron a pensar "Es normal", "Es la única forma", "Es lo que hacen todas". Bueno, finalmente y gracias a la tenacidad y dedicación de estas dos periodistas, magistralmente interpretadas en la gran pantalla, esa situación pudo denunciarse abiertamente. Es lo mismo que se denuncia en Bombshell, otra historia que también expone el abuso y el acoso sexual hacia las mujeres en la industria. Aunque, debe decirse por impactante que resulte, no se trata solamente de la industria cinematográfica o el showbizz, ese tipo de conducta se repite en otras esferas como la política por ejemplo o en cualquier puesto directivo que le de poder a un hombre sin valores que sea capaz de aprovecharse de eso ante una mujer que necesite de sus favores.
One of the most frustrating things about these types of stories is that the victims are silent. Out of shame, coercion or simple helplessness, they say nothing. But they can't forget it. They carry with them a stain, a feeling of guilt, an experience that conditions the rest of their lives. And it is that, how can a twenty-year-old girl who has no connections or money fight in court against a company like Miramax or Fox? It is such an unequal battle that it is not even fought. Everything is settled at a table, without judgment. The silence of the victims is bought because they do not have the possibility of being heard. The film mentions several actresses who were harassed and abused by Weinstein, such as Rose McGowan and Ashley Judd who appears in the film playing herself, but the list was much longer thanks to the collaboration of the Miramax board, her contacts and of an entire system that understood these practices as part of the process and even of a legal and judicial system that prevented victims from accessing the information that would allow them to enjoy the protection that the system itself should offer, hypocrisy, negligence or deliberated consent?
Una de las cosas más frustrantes de este tipo de historias es que las víctimas guardan silencio. Por vergüenza, por coerción o simple indefensión, no dicen nada. Pero no pueden olvidarlo. Llevan consigo una mancha, un sentimiento de culpa, una experiencia que condiciona el resto de su vida. Y es que, ¿cómo puede luchar en un juicio una joven de veinte años que no tiene conexiones ni dinero contra una empresa como Miramax o Fox? Es una batalla tan dispareja que ni siquiera se libra. Todo se arregla en una mesa, sin juicio. Se compra el silencio de las víctimas porque no tienen la posibilidad de ser oídas. La película menciona a varias actrices que fueron acosadas y abusadas por Weinstein, como Rose McGowan y Ashley Judd quien aparece en la película interpretándose a sí misma, pero la lista fue mucho más extensa gracias a la colaboración de la directiva de Miramax, de sus contactos y de todo un sistema que entendía estas prácticas como parte del proceso e incluso de un sistema legal y judicial que impedía a las víctimas acceder a la información que les permitiría disfrutar de la protección que el mismo sistema debía ofrecer, ¿hipocresía, negeligencia o consentimiento deliberado?
The film is based on the book written by the two journalists called She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement because it helped many other women will join in denouncing similar situations and the sentence of Weinstein (who is currently serving 23 years in prison) inspires confidence and generates hope in those who have suffered this type of abuse because there is a real possibility, now, that their words will be heard and that that the abuses suffered can be condemned. The story is demeaning, uncomfortable and shocking, but She said is a great and necessary movie, with terrific performances from the entire cast, especially the two lead reporters. La película está basada en el libro escrito por las dos periodistas llamado She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement (Ella dijo: Rompiendo la historia de acoso sexual que ayudó a iniciar un movimiento) porque sirvió para que muchas otras mujeres se sumaran a denunciar situaciones similares y la condena a Weinstein (quien actualmente cumple 23 años de prisión) inspira confianza y genera esperanza en quienes han sufrido este tipo de abusos porque existe la posibilidad real, ahora sí, de que sus palabras sean oídas y de que puedan condenarse los abusos sufridos. La historia es denigrante, incómoda e impactante, pero She said es una gran película, tan buena como necesaria, con estupendas actuaciones de todo el elenco, especialmente de las dos reporteras principales.
