This is terrible news for the terribly fat and all the more reason to put yourself in a "change your life" state of mind before you get to that point because while this is just one study, it did involve nearly 2000 participants and the results are pretty staggering.
The study came to the conclusion that severely overweight people have actually changed the way their body functions to the point where their bodies are actually fighting to KEEP the fat and after exercise the body has this strange and previously unnoticed tendency to slow down the resting metabolism. What this means is that for severely overweight people, the exercise that they do needs to be more intense in duration than it needs to be for someone who is just a tad overweight in order for the weight loss to actually occur. This is really bad news because people who make it to morbidly obese aren't exactly known for their dedication to extreme exercise.
Well on my way to obesity before I "nipped it in the bud"
I was able to catch myself before I got too terribly overweight, but i was still overweight but not yet obese and certainly not morbidly obese. I was on my way towards that part of town when I turned around though and if you are someone that is a little bit pudgy or a little bit fat, you may wish to start to take this shit seriously as soon as possible because this new study makes being really fat even scarier. For most people, if they reach that point, they are probably going to need some sort of medical intervention like bypass surgery in order to lose weight at keep it off. Liposuction won't even do anything more than temporarily fix the problem because your body doesn't know that the fat is gone and your metabolism is going to continue to function as if you still were that fat.
I do not know why this is the case but it is just one more reason to "catch yourself" before you get to the point of obesity and start to control your diet at least because this is just one more cruel twist as far as how difficult it can and will be to lose weight for people who achieve high levels of fat in their bodies.
At the start of my weight loss it was 80% diet and 20% exercise. These days it is more like 50 / 50 but i try to be careful to make note of any changes and take care of it before it gets out of control. The one and only time I got fat it didn't happen overnight, it took years and happened slowly to the point where I didn't really even notice it.
If you would like to read more into the study you can do so HERE but keep in mind that it is a scholarly article and will bore the hell out of most people.
We all know we should try to avoid getting fat but this is just one more very big reason to stop it before it gets out of control. Losing weight is hard enough but now that science has shown that your body is actually working against you once you are obese, it might be too difficult to turn around once you reach a certain point.
from athlete to fat-lete to the strongest I have ever been over the course of 20 years
