Selendang mayang is a traditional dessert originating from the Betawi culture in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is often referred to as a drink, but in my opinion, this dish is better described as a dessert or a sweet treat. It is characterized by its sweet flavor, enjoyed with coconut milk and palm sugar syrup.
Selendang mayang is made from rice flour and a mixture of hunkwe flour. Both are combined, cooked, and then poured into a mold. The final product is cut into pieces and served with coconut milk. It tastes absolutely delicious, and you might just find yourself hooked after trying it. This dish is perfect to serve after a hearty meal; presented in a colorful serving bowl with its authentic flavor, you’re sure to love it.
Well, for those of you who love sweet treats, I think this is the perfect choice for you. Especially for those of you who often host family gatherings, I think this will make a special dessert for your home.
Ingredients
Selendang Mayang Ingredients
- 100 grams rice flour
- 50 grams hunkwe flour
- 150 grams granulated sugar
- 1 liter water (as needed)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Red and green food coloring
Palm Sugar Syrup Ingredients
- 200 grams palm sugar
- 100 ml water
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
Coconut Milk Sauce Ingredients
- 500 ml coconut milk
- ½ teaspoon salt
Preparation Procedure
The main step I take to prepare selendang mayang is to make the batter by mixing rice flour and hunkwe flour.
Add granulated sugar, salt, and water while stirring; let the batter thicken slightly as you stir.
Then cook over low heat until thickened, divide into 3 portions, and add food coloring.
Once the batter is ready, pour the three portions into a square container, alternating layers of each color.
Chill briefly in the refrigerator, then cut into pieces and place in a serving bowl.
For the coconut milk, I simply bring it to a boil with salt, while for the sugar syrup, I add all the ingredients to a pot and cook. Cook and add pandan leaves, cooking until fully cooked.
Result
I serve the Selendang Mayang in a serving bowl with sugar syrup, then top it off with the thick, cooked coconut milk. For serving, you can add ice cubes or chill the coconut milk in the fridge so it’s cold when served.
The flavor is very savory, with sweetness from the sugar water; the soft, colorful selendang mayang adds a beautiful touch to this dish. I really love the combination of flavors—it’s perfect as a dessert to cap off your day.
