My beer life is leveling up in Bali!
With accessible access to liquors and beer, I can proudly say, my alcoholism is back. In Bali, though you can find the basic bintangs and heineken, you can also find a selection of crafted beer from pubs and also local breweries. The Balinese, they also have the local liquor called arak which is something that you should try when visiting the island. It’s another story soon!
But, the craft beer is something to note as it’s not too accessible in many parts of Indonesia but Bali. So, when on this island, I might as well stuff myself with two of the greatest things in the world, bacon and craft beer.
On Saturday, I was about to go to a bar that's just next door but ended up going to a pub and also a cocktail bar called The Barn Gastropub. I know this place from my coworking community Friday night get-to-gether. I just tried the bintang but didn’t finish it. And the next day, on Saturday I came back again to try their food and their beer properly.
The barn is located just outside a famous street leading to oldmans. It’s quite dark at night but google maps will easily show you the place. My first impression is that this place is a mix between a club upstairs, pub downstairs and also a restaurant that serves gastronomic experience. If you are into eating good food and enjoying good beer, this is the place.
When I arrived at the place, the staff handed me the menu and told me about freshly brewed craft beer. They even gave me a free sample that I could try. I forgot the name but the one was a bit stronger with hints of apple sour and the other one is hazy and more fruity. I ended up choosing the fresh fruity hazy beer rather than the strong apple sour one.
The beer was really refreshing and I love the smell. It had a fresh scent of citrus and also sweet berries in the mix. I can smell that beer all day because it was just that good. Not just the scent, the taste was also quite good and refreshing. It was smooth and didn't make me drunk at all. In fact, it was something like drinking water with foam on it.
Since they also told me they have a 2 for 1 deal, I ended up getting negroni. I have not tried negroni and I kept mistaking that one with campari. But actually, campari is an ingredient of negroni. I wonder If last night I was actually getting the kick but because it was refreshing and smelled really good, I don’t think the gin really kicks in for me. One thing I know though, after drinking the beer and the cocktail, I kept ordering food.
The Food
To accompany the beer, I got a sausage roll which was pork meat wrapped in pastry and served with tomato sauce. After that, I ended up eating cauliflower cheese and pizza funghi. The pizza was by far the best I’ve ever had in bali. There is no tomato sauce but just dripping in white cheese and cheese, more cheese and mushroom. All those fats to digest the beer and it was a perfect mix of sweet and savory,
The place was playing a soccer match on the screen which was something to watch while drinking the beer. And as the night gets darker, the place starts shifting its mood from romantic to something more of a party vibe. There was already a party upstairs but I didn’t go because well, I like to enjoy the beer and just relax. Plus, I am not a party goer and minimize myself getting infected with covid. In Bali though, it seems like people suddenly forgets about covid but actually, it’s still there. So, it’s better to always be vigilant.
Anyway, It was my first time getting offered sampled beer at a place. I never experienced that before and I am really looking forward to trying more beers on this island, especially the crafted ones. I heard there are some places where they do beer flights, so I am looking forward to that one.
