In this blog, I'm turning this uniform dress
To my Son's Shorts for school
These days, due to inflation and the expensive everything, being thrifty, economical, and being practical is my best resort in providing the needs of my kids for school.
Being a needlework enthusiast, I am always proud of myself for making things that seem impossible to me. I always have imaginations on what to do and how tp do it but I am always limited by resources and time but if call for it, I would definitely do it.
Recently, my pretty Laling graduated in pre-school and is now in Kinder, same with 's school and uniform. I made a post about buying their uniforms too and where I got the money from
Laling's photos were taken way back in her preschool days and I did not have so much chance to take her to school. How I wished that I was like the other mothers there that have lots of time to take their children to school and wait for them through the whole session without worries in what to eat later. But I know I am beyond blessed to have my work too, and that some people wanted what I had to have an income to sustain the family's needs too
To begin with, here is how I did it.
Handed down
The Uniform dress is a bit old but was taken good care of my mother-in-law, she's a keeper and she keeps a lot of things in her house to the point of forgetting them when you need them and remembering them when you already bought one, Funny!
But in my case, when it was my eldest daughter's time to go to preschool, Inday's uniform was handed to us. Inday is my husband's niece and she had two sisters who also used the same uniform before my could use them. During Laling's time, the uniform was a bit old and I even accidentally ripped the chest part off with my bare hands and that night, I repaired it using one of her sister's blouses for school.
I'm glad I did it even when I struggled a lot at that time. repairing clothes is worse than making one especially when you don't want to undo most of the parts because you don't know how to fix them back.
We did not expect Czak to attend school this year but he did that is why I was a bit worried on where to find his uniform. I asked my husband to buy the ones Laling's classmates had used (shorts) but he said it was already sold to the ones in Czak's batch.
After much deliberation, I decided to rip my daughter's old dress uniform to make shorts, it was very old anyway and I thought that my mother-in-law would understand.
Ripping
After my son's first week of school, I decided to start putting my plans into action and thus I ripped off the dress. I started on halving the dress into two by cutting along the sew on the hips using a cutter knife with no holder.
But don't worry, I was very careful and I did not get hurt. Ripping was fun though, it was like frogging from my crochet project, satisfying! I sound weird, don't I?
Cutting
I did not expect to have thsi long fabric taken from the skirt alone. Boy, dresses can't be underestimated!
I did my work on our bamboo sofa with lots of unfolded clothes that were previously washed so I'm sorry for the mess. Sometimes, I find it hard to make time to fold because there are a lot of things to at home. Also, the table I requested from my husband has not yet been made, he was too busy to do things still.
I did this after taking the kids to school,7:30 - 8 in the morning is my free time to do anything before I have to prepare myself for work. but time passes too fast when you have something to do, is it? It was a little past 8 when I finished ripping off, but I am very excited to see and do what I had in mind so I used to cut the fabric to my desire.
With so much fabric, I decided to make two shorts for my son, just in case my plan A won't work I will still have the chance to make another since he needs it the most.
I transferred to the bed and did the cutting of the crotch part, I honestly don't know how to use measurements on the body of my son but I was only making tansya,(estimations)
The flat Iron was a great help for me since the fabric was a bit crumpled from its previous design then I carelessly cut the supposed to-be front part of the crotch and I regretted so much, it was the wrong side that I cut! Darn. So I left it that way and went to work already.
Here comes the #needlework
On Friday night, I started sewing on my son's uniform. I don't have a working table and the dining table is not a place where I like to do things so I worked beside our bed.
I started my work as late past 8 in the evening and finished around 11. The first short was hard to. It's not my first time doing a short pant without a zipper though I wanted to try it yet when I watched a video tutorial, I was already about to give up.
Have you tried to make a short pant before?
I was not able to document my work on the crotch part of the short, I was too focused on my work and was in a hurry to get my work done.
Playing with elastics
In this part, I sent my daughters to sleep and finally had access back to my phone. I was attaching the hip part which holds the elastic. it's my first time doing this technique which I don't know how to call but I am pretty impressed with how it turned out.
Well actually, I had two trials on this part, I was not happy with the first because it made the elastic twirl inside the tube I made. I was not happy about it not being flat so I ripped it off and attached again and this time, the results were better and I am happy with it.
I asked my son to try it on, and asked him if he was happy and he said he was! He is pretty excited to wear his uniform at school.
Handsome distractions
While working I had too many distractions and that made me work even slower. My son, he was bored with the phone, he wanted to cuddle and my husband kept saying no or else, his uniform won't be finished soon but that did not stop him from touching the sewing machine, making me stop in the fear of catching his finger with he needle
My husband on the other hand keeps showing me funny videos on his phone.
Happy with my work
I was happy with my work, it looks good on the outside and when I checked on the inside, Voila! It looks neat! well, not that neat since I don't have an edging sewing machine but it looks definitely better than my previous works.
The first short pants
The Machines
Anyway, here are the machines that I used in my work. I was not able to work with them for a long time and the dust had taken over. I'm just glad they were made is stainless steel on some parts or else, it is rusty all over right now.
My twelve-stitch sewing machine looks semi-skeleton. I had trouble with it the last time I used so I opened it and kind of misplaced the cover. I used the twelve-stitch machine on the zigzag on the edge and used the smaller one to do most of the initial sewing but later on in the project, I used the bigger machine already.
The Second Short
The second short pants were a bit easy to make. I started on locking the edge with a zigzag stitch then followed by the straight one beneath it.
By this time, I already knew what and what not to do so it was easier to do and when I tried it on my son, he refused to take it off already.
Nanay's keeps
Before my son could wear the uniform to school, we needed a polo shirt to pair it with. Just in time, we had an unexpected money, my husband took my son to the store and bought him one then took my son to my mother-in-law's house.
There, when she saw that my husband bought a uniform polo, she remembered the uniforms she kept. tada! there were so many! The ones I am holding included blouses too!
Look at my husband's face telling my mother-in-law why too late to give them to us. #lol.
My mother-in-law looks tired of digging into her treasures!
Some more of the clothes she kept
My son trying on one of the polo uniforms, oh, he looks so handsome!
My eldest daughter's PE uniform was in her house too! I remember so well asking her where was it so my Laling could use them at school, she told me it was not in her house. Laling even Finished her preschool without wearing a PE uniform.
Uniform When Worn
My son wants to be a policeman one day, at least that's what he wants to be for now so he posed in one of the posters outside the police barracks and made a hand salute.
Preschool is one of the first steps in attaining education and I am happy that my son is very eager to start his journey sooner. I hope that he will be successful one day and respect, love, and humbleness will remain in his heart.
