This one was on hold until yesterday. A quick visit o the workshop helped to get things going back again. This cuatro finally has its finishing coat and a bridge going into shape. Check it out!
Este cuatro estuvo en pausa hasta ayer. Una visita rápida al taller sirvió para recuperar el momentum. Ahora ya tiene su capa de barniz y el puente va en camino a tener forma. ¡Mira el progreso!
Before getting the wood sealed, we need to add the last ornaments. This time it's a bottom piece. It's just a piece of mahogany with some pine bindings. To get it in shape you need to cut the piece to shape and then use some strips of wood to adorn it. Here, I'm trying to keep the same lines from the back's ornament. It's a aesthetic based on symmetry. Once it is done, a piece of the sides is cut right where the are joined and the ornament is put there with some help to get it glued properly.
Antes de sellar la madera, es necesario colocar los últimos adornos. Esta es una pieza para la culata. Está hecha de caoba con unas líneas de pino. Para darle forma, hay que cortar la pieza a la medida y usar unas tiras para adornarla. Estoy trando de seguir las líneas del fondo para mantener la estética simétrica. This is a process that I don't like to document because of its measy nature. Basically, you use sealant in order to cover the pore of the wood. Once you apply the layers, you sand them until everything is leveled. The dust from this process is a health hazard. Always use a mask while doing this. It also sticks to everything. That's another reason for not using the phone around this. Here you can see the change of color in the woods after this is applied. The reason you need to do this is because the secret to a great finish on wood is having a good seal process.
No me gusta documentar esta parte del proceso porque es un desastre. Básicamente, se deben sellar los poros de la madera. Una vez que aplican las capas de sellador, se lija hasta dejar todo parejo. El polvo resultante de este proceso es un riesgo a la salud. Siempre hay que usar una mascarilla mientras se hace. También se pega de todo. Esta es otra razón para no usar el teléfono cerca de esto. Aquí se puede apreciar el cambio del color de la madera luego de la aplicación del sellador. La razón para hacer esto es tener una buena base para el acabado. El secreto de un acabado espectacular es un buen sellado.
The bridge is the piece that transfers the vibrations of the strings to the sound board. It's a piece that needs both light weight and structural integrity. The design of this pieces are also part of the signature of each luthier. Most of the work done to get them crafted is done with hand tools.
El puente es la pieza que transmite las vibraciones de las cuerdas a la tapa armónica. Es una pieza que necesita dos cosas: un peso liviano y solidez estructural. El diseño del mismo es parte de la firma de cada fabricante. La mayoría del trabajo de estas piezas se hace a mano.
The finish of an instrument is its selling point. A good finish might sell a lot of instruments. It works similarly to food. Regarless, a good instrument has both looks and functionality. It's hard to see the things in the pictures. But a keen eye might notice the differences in these pictures.
El acabado de un instrumento es se primera impresión. Un buen acabado puede vender muchos intrumentos. Pero un buen instrumento tiene ambos: buen acabado y sonido. Es difícil diferencias las diferencias en estas fotos pero un ojo entrenado puede notar los pequeños cambios.
