Visit to Andrés Eloy Blanco Square (Eng/Esp)

The state of Sucre is known as the cradle of Venezuelan poets. Cruz Salmerón Acosta, José Antonio Ramos Sucre, and Andrés Eloy Blanco were born here. Just today, I went for a walk and arrived at the central Andrés Eloy Blanco square, which is located in front of the Cathedral of Cumaná.

Although the bust dedicated to the famous poet is no longer in its place, due to vandalism, the identification remains in place. The plaza is small and always bustling, from early morning until late at night, so at any time of day you can see people there engaged in different activities: chatting, playing cards, reading, waiting, studying.

I took the opportunity to rest for a while sitting in the shade of the trees that offer shade to visitors. It is undoubtedly a landmark because the square is surrounded by the Cathedral, the Antonio José de Sucre high school, the bus stop for El Peñón, and the Nuestra Señora del Carmen school, as well as two very popular bakeries.

Despite the hustle and bustle around it, this square exudes peace, so I enjoyed my brief stay while I prepared to continue walking towards the city center to run some errands.

It is nice to know what we have, our origins as a city, and the literary and philosophical roots that identify us. The legacy of Andrés Eloy Blanco must be perpetuated. He is still considered the most prominent popular poet in the country, and for this reason, new generations should explore his work.

Al estado Sucre se le conoce como la cuna de los poetas venezolanos, aquí nacieron Cruz Salmerón Acosta, José Antonio Ramos Sucre y Andrés Eloy Blanco, justamente hoy salí a caminar y llegué a la céntrica plaza Andrés Eloy Blanco, la cual se ubica frente a la Catedral de Cumaná.

Aunque el busto dedicado al insigne poeta ya no está en su lugar, producto del vandalismo, la identificación permanece en su lugar. La plaza es pequeña y siempre hay movimiento, desde que inicia la mañana hasta entrada la noche, por tal razón a cualquier hora se puede observar personas allí, realizando diferentes actividades; conversar, jugar cartas, leer, esperar, estudiar.

Aproveché para descansar un rato sentada bajo la sombra de los árboles que ofrecen su sombra a los visitantes. Sin duda es un punto referencial porque la plaza está rodeada por la Catedral, el liceo Antonio José de Sucre, la parada de autobuses que va rumbo a El Peñón y el colegio Nuestra Señora del Carmen, además de dos panaderías muy concurridas.

A pesar del bullicio a su alrededor, en esta plaza se respira paz, así que disfruté de mi breve estadía mientras me preparaba para seguir caminado rumbo al centro de la ciudad a realizar algunas diligencias.

Es agradable conocer lo que tenemos, nuestros orígenes como ciudad y las raíces literarias y filosóficas que nos identifican. El legado de Andrés Eloy Blanco debe perpetuarse, aún es considerado el poeta popular más destacado del país y por tal razón las nuevas generaciones deberían explorar su obra.
