¿Remember how I recently told you that one of my hens had made a nest? Well, several days have passed since then....

I was expecting the chicks that the hen was hatching to hatch by a certain date this month, but for some reason I don't understand one of the chicks hatched.

¿Recuerdan que hace poco les dije que una de mis gallinas había hecho un nido? Pues bien, varios días han pasado desde entonces...

Esperaba que los pollitos que la gallina estaba empollando nacieran para cierta fecha de este mes, pero por algún motivo que no entiendo uno de los pollitos rompió el cascarón.

I discovered this during one of my check-ups, because every day I usually check the hen to see if everything is all right with the eggs and with herself. Well, when I was approaching the nest I was surprised to hear the "pio pio" of the chick. I immediately picked up the hen and rather than being happy I was scared, because there were still 14 eggs left to hatch.

If he left the chick there in the nest, the hen would get up from the nest to take care of that chick and leave the other eggs alone. So she had to remove him alone from the nest.

With nothing else to do, I took the chick and brought it inside the house, put a piece of paper on the table and left it there, with a lot of things around it so it wouldn't fall off.

Esto lo descubrí en una de mis revisiones, pues todos los días suelo revisar a la gallina a ver si todo está bien con los huevos y con ella misma. Pues bien, cuando estaba acercándome al nido me sorprendió escuchar el "pio pio" del pollito. Inmediatamente levanté a la gallina y más que alegrarme me asusté, pues aún quedaban 14 huevos por eclosionar.

Si dejaba el pollito allí en el nido, la gallina se levantaría del nido para cuidar a ese pollito y dejaría solos a los otros huevos. Así que debía retirarlo a él solamente del nido.

Sin nada más que hacer, tomé al pollito y lo traje al interior de la casa, le coloqué un papel en la mesa y allí lo dejé, con un montón de cosas alrededor para que no se cayera de allí.

It's not the first time I've raised chickens, I've done it before, so I knew that some chicks might hatch after the hen was up for the day, but it had never happened to me that any chicks hatched early.

No es la primera vez que crío pollos, ya lo había hecho antes, por lo que sabía que algunos pollitos podrían nacer después de que la gallina se levantara del día, pero nunca me había pasado que algún pollito saliera del cascarón antes de tiempo.

In order to prevent this from taking me by surprise, a few days earlier I had bought some cables, a socket and a plug to make a habitat for the chick until the other chicks hatched in due time.

Con la intención de prevenir que esto me tomara por sorpresa, días antes había comprado unos cables, un socket y un enchufe para fabricarle un habitad al pollito hasta que nacieran los otros pollitos al tiempo debido.

Well, I took all these things I had bought out of storage and started putting them together. It was simply to make a wire to screw a yellow, incandescent light bulb into to provide heat for the chick.

The first thing I did was to connect the plug to the wire. Since it was a bulb that would be plugged in all day, I decided to put a sturdy plug in it, instead of one that would be damaged and toasted by the heat in a few days.

Bien, saqué del depósito todas estas cosas que había comprado y comencé a armarlas. Simplemente era hacer un cable donde enroscar un bombillo amarillo, de luz incandescente, para que diera calor al pollito.

Lo primero que hice fue conectar el enchufe al cable. Como era un bombillo que estaría todo el día conectado, decidí colocarle un enchufe resistente, en lugar de uno que se daña y queda tostado por el calor en pocos días.

I closed the plug and then connected the socket, where I screwed the yellow bulb. It is very important that it is this type of bulb, because the white led light bulbs do not emit any heat and will not serve to keep the chick warm.

El enchufe lo cerré y le conecté luego el socket, donde luego enrosqué el bombillo amarillo. Es muy importante que sea este tipo de bombillo, porque los bombillos blancos de luz led no emiten ningún tipo de calor y no servirá para mantener caliente al pollito.

There he was, right where I had left him. Even though he looked healthy, it was evident that the chick was feeling cold so I wrapped my hand around him and kept him warm with my hands for a moment and then with a towel, so the cold wouldn't hurt him.

He was very small, but at least chicks are much easier to take care of and I must say they are more resilient even at this tender age. They are all-rounders.

Ahí estaba, justo donde lo había dejado. A pesar de que se veía sano, era evidente que el pollito sentía frío así que lo rodeé con mi mano y lo mantuve abrigado con mis manos por un momento y luego con una toalla, para que el frío no le hiciera daño.

Estaba muy pequeño, pero al menos los pollitos son mucho más fáciles de cuidar y debo decir que son más resistentes incluso a esta tierna edad. Son todoterreno.

After I warmed it up a bit with my hands and the towel, I went back to the area where I would place it. I took a wide basket that I normally use to store boxes.

I cleaned the inside of the basket and placed a plastic tarp over it to make it easier to clean the dirt off the chick. I then attached the bulb to one of the top supports of the basket.

Después que lo calenté un poco con mis manos y la toalla, volví al área en donde lo colocaría. Tomé una cesta amplia que normalmente uso para guardar cajas.

Limpié el interior de la cesta y le coloqué una lona de plástico para limpiar más fácilmente la suciedad del pollito. Luego le coloqué el bombillo en uno de los soportes superiores de la cesta.

Then I took the towel where I had the chick and placed it inside the basket. Sooner rather than later the chick came out of the towel when it felt the heat generated by the light bulb.

Después tomé la toalla en donde tenía al pollito y la coloqué dentro de la cesta. Más temprano que tarde el pollito salió de la toalla al sentir el calor que generaba el bombillo.

Surprisingly, the chick felt comfortable, so it would just be a matter of leaving food and water there while the other chicks hatched in a matter of 3 to 4 days. But I had to give the other eggs time, otherwise they would die.

While the other chicks are under the protective wings of their mother hen, this little premature chick will be under my watchful eye and then returned to its mother hen.

Sorpresivamente se sentía cómodo el pollito, así que solo sería cuestión de dejarle comida allí y agua mientras los otros pollitos salían en cuestión de 3 a 4 días. Pero debía darle tiempo a los otros huevos, de lo contrario morirían.

Mientras los otros pollitos están bajo las alas protectoras de su mamá gallina, este pequeño pollito prematuro estará bajo mi ojo vigilante para luego devolverlo a su gallina.
