Plot

The film opens with Peter Parker’s voiceover, in which he talks about his life in the year since the events of the previous installment—a time during which things have gone quite well for him. In addition to his popularity as Spider-Man in New York City, he’s also been doing exceptionally well as a college student, as a photographer for the Daily Bugle, and as Mary Jane Watson’s current boyfriend. Speaking of Mary Jane, we see her make her Broadway debut, while Peter sits in the front row watching her sing. However, his former best friend, Harry Osborn, glares at Peter with hatred during the performance and remembers that he is Spider-Man, plotting to take revenge for his father’s death.

This is the Spider-Man movie—out of Sam Raimi’s entire trilogy—that I’ve enjoyed the most. But not because it was the best, but because it’s the one that makes me laugh the most, thanks to the various clips and scenes it features that have gone viral online over the years. I don’t think I need to reiterate just how iconic and influential these three Spider-Man films are, both in the world of cinema and in the entertainment industry as a whole. Aside from revolutionizing the way superhero movies are made, Sam Raimi managed to create one of the best portrayals of Peter Parker. However, with this third and final installment, we witness the hero’s unexpected conclusion, following the many changes and challenges the film faced during and after production. While Spider-Man 3 was a commercial success at the time, it didn’t fare as well with critics. Many people complained about this third installment due to the “large number” of new characters, in addition to the villains we see as well. I don’t know if others have criticized this aspect of the film too, but I will say that I didn’t like the way they handled Peter Parker’s entire relationship with Mary Jane throughout the film.

Si bien Spider-Man 3 se ha convertido en todo un éxito comercial para aquella época, con la crítica no tuvo la misma buena suerte. Mucha gente llegó a quejarse de esta tercera entrega por la “gran cantidad” de nuevos personajes, además de los villanos que vemos también. No sé si los demás han criticado esto también de la película, pero yo sí diré que no me gustó la forma en la que manejaron toda la relación de Peter Parker con Mary Jane a lo largo de la película.

But amidst all these events, we also see the emergence of two new enemies: one is a Symbiote that emerged from a small space rock that fell to Earth one night near where the couple was. The other is an ex-convict on the run from the law who tries to hide, but falls into a massive pit inside an experimental facility where he turns into sand.

Aunque, claro, seguramente sea solo yo nomás que nunca me ha llegado a caer bien el papel de Mary Jane durante toda esta trilogía. Esto, sumado a que Tobey Maguire hizo una interpretación nunca antes vista con Peter Parker en esta tercera película. Dicha interpretación quedaría para la posteridad como un símbolo, un meme, un chiste bastante reutilizado en la cultura popular hoy en día, inclusive. Y no es de extrañar, ya que con todo lo que vimos de nuestro protagonista en las dos anteriores películas, lo que hace en esta última entrega es todo lo contrario a lo que llegamos a conocer de él. Desde su lado “Emo” o dark o como se llame hasta su icónico e inolvidable baile. Pero vamos primero a hablar de su trama principal, la cual está ambientada un año después de todo lo ocurrido al final de Spider-Man 2. Vemos a un Peter Parker más responsable, más presente y más autosuficiente. También vemos que tiene planes para pedirle a Mary Jane, su actual pareja, que se case con él. Pero durante todos estos acontecimientos también vemos la aparición de dos nuevos enemigos, siendo este un simbionte salido de una pequeña roca espacial que cayó en la tierra una noche cerca de donde estaba la pareja. The inclusion of three different villains is something that, according to many, isn’t pleasant to watch because it’s so exhausting. Personally, I think that’s nonsense. The introduction and development of Flint Marko as Sandman is great, though it does bother me a bit that they changed part of the main plot for his introduction, but whatever. Harry Osborn becoming the Green Goblin didn’t surprise me at all since it was to be expected, but the Plot Twist of his amnesia gave it a pretty clever twist. Now, as for Venom, I don’t think it’s bad either, since it introduced us to the famous Black Spider-Man. And not only that, but we also met the Emo Peter Parker, who’s completely different from the one we know.

Ah, y no hay que olvidarnos del mejor amigo de Peter Parker, Harry Osborn, quien al conocer su verdadera identidad como Spider-Man piensa vengarse al fin de Peter por la muerte de su padre y se convierte en el nuevo Duende Verde. I won’t deny that at the time, when I saw it, I thought it was cool and all, but now it just makes me laugh, honestly. I get that, with so many villains and antagonists at once, we didn’t get to see a “Final Boss” or whatever people were expecting back then. Since there are so many of them, each antagonist’s appearance and impact isn’t as strong as that of a main villain like Dr. Octopus or Norman Osborn’s Green Goblin. In this third installment, we only saw the three secondary villains and no main villain at the end. Although, if we look closely, the main villain might have been Venom, as he pushed our protagonist, Peter Parker, to become a stronger hero—and, at the same time, more self-centered, cold, and narcissistic. We do see some signs of this early on due to all the fame he’s gained from being Spider-Man in New York. But it was with the Symbiote that his attitude changed so drastically that he became unrecognizable, doing things he normally wouldn’t do. That’s why, in the end, Venom becomes an almost invincible enemy by getting to know Parker so well—both his strengths and his weaknesses.

On the other hand, Flint Marko is a great antagonist, beyond simply being a villain. At the beginning, we’re given a backstory that encourages us to empathize a bit with his situation. By the end, we come to understand why he did what he did and why he didn’t become a villain after all. That’s why I don’t think he was a villain per se—or at least not all the time. His character development is emotional and fascinating. In contrast, Harry Osborn had a much better performance and portrayal than in the previous installment, where he just flaunted his wealth and got drunk. Here we see him becoming the Green Goblin, though he never becomes as evil as his father was. Now, we’ll say he fell far short of matching Norman Osborn, but I don’t think he did that badly in the end, though, well, he had the bad luck he had. But I won’t say more so as not to spoil anything for the two or three people reading this review who’ve never seen this movie because they’re lacking in cultural knowledge. Now, getting back to Peter Parker and Mary Jane, I think this movie went a bit overboard with everything that happened in their relationship. Those of you who have seen the movie will remember the scenes or moments I’m referring to. On one hand, we see Mary Jane as nothing but obsessed with her dream of becoming a Broadway actress and little else.

It’s not like I disliked it entirely, since it had a fairly convincing conclusion, at least as far as one would normally expect. Last but not least, let’s talk about the audiovisual aspects of Spider-Man 3. As one of the most expensive films in history, the producers really went all out when making it—and for good reason. Visually, it’s not bad at all. It maintains its signature cinematography and use of both static and moving shots. What does change significantly is its color palette and the use of light and shadow, making it a much darker film than its predecessors. However, the design of Spider-Man’s Black suit is fascinating, and the same can be said for the Symbiote’s design.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual de Spider-Man 3. Siendo una de las películas más costosas de toda la historia, los productores de esta película exageraron un montón al momento de hacerla y con mucha razón. En cuanto a lo visual no está para nada mal. Mantiene su estilo de fotografía y planos fijos y en movimiento. Lo que sí cambia mucho es su paleta de colores y el uso de luces y sombras, siendo una película mucho más oscura que las anteriores. Sin embargo, el diseño del traje en negro de Spider-Man es fascinante y lo mismo se puede decir del diseño del Simbionte.

The computer-generated effects were absolutely mind-blowing for the time it was released. The sound effects are excellent as well; in fact, you could say they’re one of the film’s standout features—aside from the visuals, of course. The same goes for the film’s soundtrack, which wasn’t composed by Elfman, as in the previous installments, but rather by Christopher Young—and he didn’t do a bad job at all; quite the opposite, in fact. What’s more, that soundtrack is still listened to today as a cultural icon and a popular sound. Anyway, I’m recommending this third Spider-Man movie to all fans of this great hero. Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the superhero genre is concerned.

Los efectos hechos por computadora son todo una locura para la época en la que fue estrenada. Los efectos de sonido son excelentes también, incluso se puede decir que es de lo más destacable, aparte de lo visual, claro. Lo mismo ocurre con la banda sonora de esta película, la cual no está a cargo de Elfman, como ocurrió en las entregas anteriores, sino que esta vez se ocupó Christopher Young y no lo hizo tan mal, sino todo lo contrario, más bien. Es más, dicha banda sonora se sigue escuchando como un ícono o sonido muy cultural y popular en la actualidad. En fin, les dejo esta tercera película de Spider-Man para los que son fans de este gran héroe. Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de superhéroes.
