An image almost transcendant, Miyamoto Musashi and the matters are such a confounded debate, one could argue he didn’t exist. Yet the record tells of many moments, including his own musings on the course of combat and the fights of life. Musashi didn’t name his treatises, he namely titled five different scrolls, each a metaphor which his students would name, The Book of Five Rings. Nagaoka Naoyuki and Toyota Masakata conceived Gorin-no-sho as a shorthand title in their notes, which stuck.
A warrior wasn't all umbrella-tanas. You had to know things, too.
Those two are of note, since they noticed posterity could use a good book. As a matter of fact, this month’s challenge- photograph 30 everyday items- progressed so smoothly thanks to this, Atomic Habits by James Clear. My college freshman sister had this book assigned to her prior to joining the school she’s left.
Her choices were: remain at a campus with a wack community or leave for one with her high-school bestie. She completed her readings, to my pleasant surprise. Years of mumbling to “get a book” out of annoyance didn’t make a great impression, I thought. Another class covering the text as an assigned reading reached the thirteenth chapter. I am stopped at the sixth, concurrently perusing Miyamoto’s musings, The Paradox of Choice and some other light leisure.
A guide of activities seldom hurts. Look at all of the content coming out today: travel guides, how-to’s- I made a Wendy’s burger according to a vlogging chef’s instructions.
Reading’s proved an essential part of my life, and they’ve certainly taken me places. Musashi writes that the Way of the sword in its pursuit of mastery isn’t unlike the farmer, or writer, for instance. Then it holds the real task is diligence. Adherence to the Way we choose to go makes us warriors. As the new year approaches, it’s a must I trust my digital, visual and written legacy to these notebook pages and pictures.
‘The good news is that they have put together a cinematically breath-taking filmed bio to illustrate the life, times and ritual suicide of Yukio Mishima… With its stunning production design by Eiko Ishioka, handsomely photographed by John Bailey, and composer-arranger Philip Glass’s insidiously spellbinding musical score, Mishima occasionally resembles a great movie.’
The achievement I look forward to most on the Way of the visualist must be the production of a movie.
