A Feastival That Went On For Yards!
Ah, the Superbowl. Football has been an ever-present fixture in my life. One of my earliest memories is watching my father scream touchdown and galloping theatrically around my grandparent's living room. Every weekend throughout the fall and early winter revolved around the game, and the Super Bowl was just as much a national holiday as any of the other days we celebrated as Americans. Nothing brings a family together like an occasion for trash talking and consuming gargantuan amounts of party food.
That said, over the years I haven't really watched that much football. The game has become too over commercialized, politicized, and quite honestly boring. I enjoy watching local kids play and have no shortage of college teams round me if I feel the need to elevate my blood pressure by viewing some skull crashing excellence. The Super Bowl, however, is another occasion altogether, for it doesn't matter what team is playing in the event, I'm going to be playing another kind of field: The Food Bowl!
And yesterday's food feastival did not disappoint. Just look at some of the offerings:
Bacon, spinach artichoke dip in an artisan bread bowl:
My husband's super amazing guacamole:
Deep fried sesame chicken wings:
My husband's crab won tons, I was lucky to even get a picture of one of them, for they disappear fast!:
There was also all manner of meat, veg, cheese, and cracker trays, but one of the biggest star players in the food fest this year was a new comer, a twist on a bacon wrapped jalapeno popper. My friend took a bunch of those little sweet peppers, the yellow, orange, and red ones. He filled each one with cream cheese, stuck a Little Smokie into the cream cheese, wrapped the pepper in bacon and smoked the creation in his smoker. I am not ashamed to admit that I probably ate at least twenty of the things. Heck, I want to eat one right now. They were soooo stinking good.
And no Super Bowl food fest would be complete without Brownie Surprise. Many years ago when I was in college I used to go to my grandma's on Sundays and watch football. We would have a little potluck-like dinner thing as we all chilled in my papa's garage and shouted abuse at the screen and each other. Good times. Well, one weekend I concocted this brownie dish for my uncle, a dish that he christened Brownie Surprise. The dessert consists of some double fudge brownies, a layer of whipped chocolate mousse, and a layer of whipped topping. I then grate milk chocolate on the top of the calorie laden sugar fest. Brownie Surprise is an all star player in the Food Bowl, for it hasn't been absent from a game since 2004. Longevity!!
My stomach achieved MVP status part of the way through the game: Maximum Volume Perfected. Today I am pretty sure that I am listing to one side, as I still might be full. Kickboxing class found this Kat stumbling a bit as I am pretty sure that I was still digesting from the day before. Let's just say that I haven't had to eat a lot today, and I am all smiles about it, for I look forward to the food fest that is National Food and Libation day every year.
And as most of the time, all of the saliva inducing images were taken on my author's sad it doesn't have teeth and digestive system iPhone.
