It is extremely crucial that you eat well if you are trying to build muscle. A lot of times, I have friends that tell me they have plateaued and when I ask them what they eat and what sort of training they undergo, they often say "I do ___ for training and I just eat whatever". And when I tell them it's their diet that's holding them back, they shrug and say "but I don't really feel a difference when I diet". The thing is, you eat 3 times a day. Most of us probably go to the gym 3 times a week. Hence it is pretty obvious that nutrition is just as - if not more, important than your training.
Most of us probably won't need to eat 5000 calories like the guy in the video below to bulk. For me, at 155 pounds, about 2800 calories seems to be more than enough. I recommend using a calorie tracking app like Myfitnesspal and also weighing yourself daily and recording it in some sort of spreadsheet online or a journal and calculating your average weight that week at the end of the week. When your weekly average weight starts to stagnate, you can adjust your calories accordingly. You tend to want to eat about 200 calories above your maintenance calories and increase it by perhaps a 100 after your weight stagnates.
I know dieting can be a pain, but if you want the best results, it really is crucial! It might be tough, but I know you can do it.
