_“Las historias con nombre de mujer son mapas de vida: sus huellas no se borran, se cuentan.”_

***Saludos a todos. Este concurso nos invita a contar vidas con nombre propio, desde lo cotidiano y lo sincero. Escribir sobre mujeres reales que dejan huella siempre es un reto para mí. Cada crónica es un gesto de memoria y cariño: nombrarlas es reconocerlas, acercarlas, y hacer que su historia también nos toque. En mi caso, fue la historia de una mujer que acompañó toda la vida a un cultor, y que gracias a ella se volvió casi indispensable para que él pudiera culminar grandes obras populares.***

Epifanía Gil, una mujer entre la niebla del páramo

***Uno en la vida se encuentra con mujeres que lo marcan. En mi caso, todo empieza con mi mamá y sigue con mi esposa: dos mujeres calladas, de esas que sostienen el mundo sin hacer ruido. Pero también están esas otras, las que aparecen en la historia de un pueblo sin buscar fama y dejan una huella imborrable. Mujeres que viven a su manera y terminan siendo el sostén silencioso de los sueños ajenos. De una de ellas quiero contarles hoy.***

***Aquí arriba, en el páramo merideño, donde el frío cala los huesos y el viento susurra historias, vivió Epifanía Gil. No era heroína de novela ni usaba vestidos elegantes. Tenía las manos gastadas de bregar, una sonrisa callada y mirada tranquila. Piel curtida por el sol y por el páramo. Mujer de paso firme sobre las piedras antiguas del camino.***

***Yo no la conocí. Pero el destino suele tejer encuentros. Una prima hermana suya, Matilde Gil, vive en La Provincia, sector que visito hace años. Siempre terminamos charlando, café de por medio. Una vez le pregunté por Juan Félix Sánchez. Fue entonces, como abriendo una puerta cerrada, cuando Matilde soltó el nombre de Epifanía.***

***Me contó que Epifanía nació en 1914, en San Rafael de Mucuchíes. Creció en una casa humilde, entre frío, trabajo y montaña. Desde niña aprendió a tejer lana con su mamá, doña Isaína, hilando sin saberlo su destino. Porque años después, aquella muchacha terminaría unida a uno de los hombres más singulares de los Andes venezolanos.***

***Matilde recordaba que Juan Félix era soñador y vivía casi siempre solo. El páramo lo arropaba, pero la soledad pesaba más que el frío. Miró distinto a Epifanía, esa mujer sencilla siempre cerca. No le hizo poemas. Un día, con franqueza de pueblerino, le dijo: —Ven conmigo, que juntos seremos como hermanos en esta montaña.***

***Se fueron a El Potrero, lugar apartado en El Tisure, a unas seis horas en mula. Levantaron con sus manos una choza de adobe y techo de paja. En ese sitio perdido, Epifanía se convirtió en el hilo que sostenía todo.***

***Matilde decía que su fuerza era como el agua que, gota a gota, parte la piedra. Mientras Juan Félix soñaba con capillas, ella trabajaba en un telar de cuatro lisos que él mismo había diseñado. Preparaba tintes con raíces: el rojo de la risita y el azul de la añina. Con esos colores hacían mantas para ferias lejanas.***

***Pero lo que más la definía eran los detalles. Una vez, Juan Félix estaba frustrado porque las piedras para un retablo de la Virgen de Coromoto no tenían color. Epifanía, sin decir mucho, tomó su saco de fique y se metió sola en la neblina. Horas después volvió empapada, con rocas rojizas y azules de arroyos escondidos. —Toma, Félix, pa' que tu Virgen brille —le dijo.***

***Gracias a esos gestos, muchas obras —capillas, pesebres y tallas entre 1952 y 1980— pudieron levantarse. Juan Félix lo reconocía: —Todo lo que hice fue con ella, mi única ayuda verdadera. También recordaban un momento difícil: unos hombres los drogaron y saquearon la casa. Fue Epifanía quien sostuvo todo, permitiendo que él continuara creando sin vencerse por el miedo.***

***Juan Félix murió en 1997, a los noventa y seis años. Epifanía lo siguió en el 2000. Hoy descansan juntos en la Capilla de Piedra de San Rafael de Mucuchíes. En Mérida se dice que Epifanía Gil no solo caminó al lado de un grande. Fue también la raíz silenciosa de su obra, la fuerza tranquila que hizo posible su camino. Porque en las montañas las grandes historias no las escriben los poderosos. Las escriben las manos humildes que trabajan y van tejiendo el mañana.***

***Así que gracias, Matilde, por contarme esta historia: la de Epifanía, esa mujer del páramo que, sin quererlo, terminó siendo parte de lo más hermoso de nuestra tierra.***

***Greetings to everyone. This contest invites us to tell stories of lives with their own names, from the everyday and the sincere. Writing about real women who leave a mark is always a challenge for me. Every chronicle is a gesture of memory and affection: naming them is recognizing them, bringing them closer, and allowing their story to touch us as well. In my case, it was the story of a woman who accompanied a cultural artisan throughout his entire life, and thanks to her he became almost indispensable in helping him complete great popular works.***

Epifanía Gil, a woman among the mist of the páramo

***In life, one encounters women who leave a mark. In my case, it all begins with my mother and continues with my wife: two quiet women, the kind who hold the world together without making noise. But there are also those others, the ones who appear in the history of a town without seeking fame and leave an unforgettable mark. Women who live in their own way and end up becoming the silent support of other people's dreams. Today I want to tell you about one of them.***

***Up here, in the Mérida páramo, where the cold reaches the bones and the wind whispers stories, lived Epifanía Gil. She was not a heroine from a novel nor did she wear elegant dresses. Her hands were worn from hard work, with a quiet smile and a calm gaze. Skin weathered by the sun and the páramo. A woman with a firm step over the ancient stones of the path.***

***I never met her. But destiny often weaves encounters. One of her cousins, Matilde Gil, lives in La Provincia, a place I have visited for years. We always end up chatting, coffee in between. One day I asked her about Juan Félix Sánchez. That was when, as if opening a closed door, Matilde mentioned the name Epifanía.***

***She told me that Epifanía was born in 1914, in San Rafael de Mucuchíes. She grew up in a humble house, surrounded by cold, work, and mountains. From a young age she learned to weave wool with her mother, Doña Isaína, unknowingly spinning the thread of her own destiny. Years later, that young woman would join her life with one of the most singular men of the Venezuelan Andes.***

***Matilde remembered that Juan Félix was a dreamer and lived almost always alone. The páramo embraced him, but solitude weighed more than the cold. He began to look differently at Epifanía, that simple woman who was always nearby. He did not write poems to her. One day, with the frankness of a man from the countryside, he said: —Come with me, and together we will be like siblings in this mountain.***

***They moved to El Potrero, a remote place in El Tisure, about six hours away by mule. With their own hands they built an adobe hut with a straw roof. In that lonely place, Epifanía became the thread that held everything together.***

***Matilde used to say that her strength was like water that, drop by drop, splits the stone. While Juan Félix dreamed of chapels, she worked on a four-heddle loom that he himself had designed. She prepared dyes from roots: the red of the risita and the blue of the añina. With those colors they made blankets to sell in distant fairs.***

***But what defined her most were the small details. Once, Juan Félix was frustrated because the stones for a retable of the Virgin of Coromoto had no color. Epifanía, without saying much, took her fique sack and went alone into the mist. Hours later she returned soaked, carrying reddish and bluish rocks she had found in hidden streams. —Here, Félix, so your Virgin can shine —she told him.***

***Thanks to gestures like these, many works —chapels, nativity scenes, and carvings between 1952 and 1980— were able to be completed. Juan Félix himself acknowledged it: —Everything I did was with her, my only true help. They also remembered a difficult moment: some men drugged them and robbed their home. It was Epifanía who held everything together, allowing him to continue creating without being defeated by fear.***

***Juan Félix died in 1997, at the age of ninety-six. Epifanía followed in 2000. Today they rest together in the Stone Chapel of San Rafael de Mucuchíes. In Mérida it is said that Epifanía Gil did not only walk beside a great man. She was also the silent root of his work, the quiet strength that made his path possible. Because in the mountains the great stories are not written by the powerful. They are written by humble hands that work and weave tomorrow.***

***So thank you, Matilde, for telling me this story: the story of Epifanía, that woman of the páramo who, without intending it, became part of the most beautiful things of our land.***
