Raíces y alas: el legado de mamá

El domingo pasado fue el Día de la Madre, y en su honor, nuestra querida amiga @damarysvibra publicó un post donde, basándose en su propia experiencia, habla sobre cómo la figura materna es fundamental en el desarrollo del carácter de sus hijos. Personalmente, tengo una madre dedicada, abnegada, trabajadora, de carácter fuerte y muy apegada a la familia. Recuerdo que cuando era niña, mi abuela paterna nos cuidaba porque mis padres trabajaban. Mi madre, al igual que mi padre, tenía una rutina: salía de casa temprano y regresaba por la tarde. Y aunque mi padre cubría la mayor parte de los gastos del hogar, mi madre contribuía a la economía familiar.

Mi madre tuvo una infancia difícil: empezó a trabajar a los 12 años y solo fue a la escuela. Trabajaba para ayudar a su madre, mi abuela, que tenía muchos hijos. Quizás por eso nunca fue una madre cariñosa, porque tuvo que madurar y asumir responsabilidades prematuramente. Mi padre cumplió ese rol de figura amorosa y consentidora. Mi madre era la figura de autoridad, y aunque siempre decía que debíamos pedirle permiso a papá para salir, sabíamos que ella era quien daba las órdenes: tenía la última palabra. Si mamá decía que no, era no, incluso si papá había dicho que sí. Mi relación con ella siempre ha sido buena, aunque hemos tenido nuestros desacuerdos. Creo que muchos de esos desacuerdos se deben a que somos muy parecidas. Como ella, soy muy directa, sincera, quizás no muy cariñosa, decidida, autosuficiente y trabajadora. Pero también, muchos de esos desacuerdos se deben precisamente a que soy completamente opuesta a ella.

Por ejemplo, mi madre tiene un admirable sentido del sacrificio. Creo que en otra vida fue monja, enfermera, doctora, o en todas las vidas que ha tenido, siempre ha sido madre. Solo ella es capaz de dar su vida por conocidos y desconocidos por igual, de donar un órgano si alguien lo necesita. Nunca la he visto anteponerse a sí misma; para ella, todos los demás son lo primero, y luego, si hay espacio, es para ella. No creo que su altruismo o generosidad se deba simplemente a que es madre; siento que es parte de su esencia, su vocación, su espíritu. Del mismo modo, aunque a veces me parezco a ella, siento que prefiere hacerlo todo sola y no pedir ayuda a nadie. Su autosuficiencia no conoce límites. "Puedo hacerlo yo sola" parece ser su lema. Con los años, me he dado cuenta de cómo, efectivamente, mi madre ha moldeado mi carácter. El hecho de que trabaje, de que tenga mi propio dinero, por ejemplo, es sin duda una característica que heredé de ella. Aunque suene duro, ganar mi propio dinero me ha dado cierta independencia, cierta libertad. Asimismo, aunque no soy madre, siento que mis seres queridos, mi familia, son lo más importante para mí. Entiendo y acepto mi responsabilidad de cuidarlos, amarlos y apoyarlos. Mamá me enseñó que, aunque mis ramas se extiendan por todo el mundo, la familia es mi raíz. En resumen, por todo lo que me ha enseñado de una u otra forma, sobre quién soy o quién no quiero ser, gracias, mamá.

Roots and wings: Mom's legacy

Personally, I have a dedicated, selfless, hardworking, strong-willed, and very family-oriented mother. I remember that when I was a child, my paternal grandmother took care of us because my parents worked. My mother, like my father, kept to a schedule, leaving home early and returning in the afternoon. And although my father covered most of the household expenses, my mother contributed to the family finances. My mom had a difficult childhood: she started working at 12 and only went to school. Mom worked to help her mother, my grandmother, who had many children. Perhaps that's why she was never a loving mother, because she had to grow up and take on responsibilities prematurely. My father filled that loving role. My mother was the authority figure, and although she always said we should ask Dad for permission to go out, we knew she was the one who gave the orders: she had the final say. If Mom said no, it was no, even if Dad had said yes. My relationship with her has always been good, although we've had our disagreements. I feel that many of those disagreements stem from the fact that we're very similar. Like her, I'm very direct, sincere, perhaps not very affectionate, strong-willed, and hardworking. But also, many of those disagreements are precisely because I'm the complete opposite of her. For example, my mother has an admirable sense of sacrifice. I think that in another life she was a nun, a nurse, a doctor, or in all the lives she's had, she's always been a mother. Only she is capable of giving her life for acquaintances and strangers alike, of giving up an organ if someone else needed it. I've never seen my mother put herself first; for her, everyone else comes first, and then, if there's room, it's for her. I don't think her altruism or selflessness is just because she's a mother; I feel it's part of her essence, her calling, her spirit. Likewise, although I can sometimes be like her, I feel she prefers to do everything herself and not ask others for help. Her self-sufficiency knows no bounds. "I can do it myself" seems to be her motto. Over the years, I've become very aware of how my mother has shaped my character. The fact that I work, that I have my own money, for example, is undoubtedly a characteristic I inherited from her. Whether it sounds harsh or not, earning my own money has given me a certain independence, a certain freedom. Likewise, even though I'm not a mother, I feel that my loved ones, my family, are the most fundamental thing to me. I understand and accept my responsibility to care for them, to love them, and to support them. Mom taught me that even if my branches spread across the world, family is my root.
