By the fourth day of our trip we had already visited the main attractions that we had on our list. Wednesday ended up being more of a relaxation day before the long drive home Thursday would bring us.
I had been hoping to do some fishing while I was in the Upper Peninsula and this day seemed like the perfect opportunity. Thank goodness for Google Maps and the ability to see satellite imagery of the area. After doing a fair amount of research, I was able to determine that about thirty to forty five minutes away was a decent sized lake called Prickett Lake.
Prickett lake was created by damming the Sturgeon River. That is the same river that created the canyon and waterfalls at Canyon Falls in this post.
Prickett lake appeared to be pretty accessible with a designated fishing dock which was a major plus for me since I didn't have a boat. Hat's off to for being a good sport and riding along with me to the lake. She stayed in the truck and read while I went fishing, but it was still nice to have her along.
After making our way down some dirt roads and then some roads that I am not even sure you could call dirt roads we found ourselves at the lake. I am not kidding when I say this thing was buried in the woods. Driving back there were some areas of the forest that were so dense I almost expected to see big foot (sorry, Darryl) staring back at me.
I was pretty excited to see that there was only one other car at the boat launch. It was an older man and his dog. They were already out in the lake fishing around some of the stumps. I had the whole fishing dock to myself!
It was an absolutely beautiful morning on the lake. I didn't have a ton of luck with the fish and I lost a couple of lures and bobbers trying to fish around the stumps, but it was so relaxing to just be out fishing.
It wasn't all bad luck...
In the end I think I caught two very small fish that I had to throw back. I hope one day this perch will be a nice meal for some lucky fisherman.
I could have stayed out on the lake all day, but I forgot to bring sun screen and I was worried the sun reflecting off the lake would burn me to a crisp. Plus I wanted to be respectful of 's time. She could read, but cell signal was pretty non-existent, so she probably would have gotten bored eventually.
We headed back towards Baraga, MI and our campsite, but we had one more stop we had to make first. Just around the bay in L'Anse, MI I had been told about a place that had amazing cinnamon roles from one of my colleagues in another school district.
We didn't eat at the Hilltop Restaurant so I can't speak to the rest of their food, but the cinnamon roll was pretty fantastic. It provided us sweet snacks for several days.
Notice the Roku remote next to it to help give you an idea about the shear size of this thing. It was huge.
Good news if you live in the US, I think they ship the cinnamon rolls. I also think Roy's from yesterday ships their pasties too, but the shipping area may be limited, so check out their websites before you get too excited. They are both totally worth it if they do service where ever you live.
We packed up most of our stuff on Wednesday night so Thursday morning we could get on the road bright and early.
The drive home was pretty uneventful and we made it home in a little over seven hours. After stopping in Naubinway, MI to get gas the truck was just about running on fumes when we pulled into the driveway.
So there you go, just about 1400 miles later that was our first Upper Peninsula trip of the Summer. It was a total blast and if you ever get the chance to visit the far Western portion of the UP I highly recommend it. There is so much to do in the Keweenaw area.
