Yesterday was my birthday (yes, shameless plug) and I had a great time. This is the second birthday I'm celebrating during Covid and while it could have been better it was still great. No family and no friends. Just me and my girlfriend. As long as life is back to normal for the big 30 so I can throw a big party I'm not gonna complain.
Luckily, this birthday lined up with the Easter holidays. As a teacher I have 10 whole days off work for Easter. The extra holidays are by far my favorite part about the job. A normal 100% job in Norway has 225 days of work while us teachers work for 195 days on average each year. Then again, we work for the same amount of hours meaning our average work week is 43 hours instead of 37.5. Enough about that. Boring numbers. Let's look at some meat.
MEAT & BEER!!!
Infections are spiking in Norway at the moment so there are a lot of regulations going about. Luckily restaurants were open so we were able to go out for a bite. Being the birthday boy it was of course for me to choose where to eat.
I'm a simple man. I like meat and I like beer. Give me those and you'll leave me satisfied. The choice fell on Brasilia, the only Brazilian restaurant in town. They have a mean buffet and some mean meat. They come around with sides of meat, slicing and serving it at the table. Whatever accessories you want you get at the buffet. You get a chip that you can flip to show a red or a green side. Green means you want more meet, red means you need a break.
There will be no salads on this day. I went with some sweet potatoes and the corn & bacon mix. I got pepper sauce and mushroom sauce for the meat. From there on out I just left the brick on green and let the meat come flowing to me.
Let's talk about the meat. There's so much meat. I don't even know what some of the types I was served was cause I didn't hear the waiter and just said "yes" when he asked. I know for a fact that there was bacon-wrapped chicken, lamb, roast-beef, tenderloin, rib-eye, rump steak and sirloin. Apart from the chicken which was a little dry there wasn't a piece of meet that wasn't awesome. Everything was grilled perfectly with that sweet pink showing in the middle.
I ate so much I think I may actually have committed a criminal act. Eat as much as you want doesn't sit well with me. I can't control myself when the food is this good.
The only thing that was missing was the beer. Due to the aforementioned Covid regulations restaurants aren't serving any alcohol these days. They used to have it so that restaurants could serve it to guests who were also eating but for some reason the government decided to just stop that.
Luckily I have awesome friends. Before heading into town to eat the door bell rang and I was confused. I didn't expect any guests but it was my birthday after all so there could be some unexpected visitors.
Lo and behold there stood a delivery man with a case of 12 beers. Ordered from the local brewery 7 Fjell Bryggeri. I had already had one and had even bought my own to drink after the restaurant but this was just such an awesome surprise. My friends know me to well.
If you like beer and ever get the chance I recommend Småtøs (that's Norwegion for little slut), Ulriken Double IPA, Kjuagutt (amber ale) and Fløien IPA. While I have yet to taste a beer I don't like from them those four are my favorites.
Fun fact: The city I live in, Bergen, lies between seven mountains. In Norway it's also known as the city between the seven mountains. Fjell is Norwegian for mountain. That's where the brewery, 7 Fjell, has its name from. Fløien and Ulriken are two of those mountains, with Ulriken being the tallest (643 masl) out of the seven.
Movies & games
The rest of the day was spent at home on the couch. Drinking beer, watching movies and playing video games. We watched Bad Trip which was pretty funny. It's a mix of scripted comedy and hidden camera pranks. I recommend it if you're after a good laugh.
We played some Super Mario 3D World which was great. Super Mario is always great. Then we started watching the new season of Prodigal Son. We really like this show. It utilizes a great mix of crime and psychology with a focus on serial killers. Check it out if you haven't! Michael Sheen is great in it.
