Hey Hive!
Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again, but up to 2 people and obviously you have to be vaccinated. However, we're still trying to stay safe and limiting our time out, at least around peak hour timings since I hate being around crowds anyway.
So the other day, I took a break from streaming at my usual late hours since I was due for a day off after streaming daily for quite some time. Sean and I took the night off and decided to go out late at night for once and take a stroll around our neighbourhood. It was after midnight, so there were few people out and about, and the weather was a lot more cooling which was good since it was pretty warm around here last month. Perfect conditions to have a midnight date!
We were thinking about where we'd walk to when Sean found this dimsum shop in a nearby hawker center that was open 24 hours, and apparently most of their items were priced at only $1.30! It's pretty cheap for dimsum and we were excited to go and check it out since it's within walking distance from our place. And having a good and cheap dimsum place that's open 24 hours right near our house? That's the dream!
So we took a walk to the hawker center in question and after a while, we found it! It was pretty much the only place that still had flashing lights around at 1am in the morning.
We stepped into this pretty cool-looking hawker center, but we were surprised at how many shops there were over here we never even knew existed!
There was even a really nice wall mural here that was so well done, it fit in with the hawker center so well!
There were only 3 stalls open at the time; the drinks stall, a noodle stall and of course, the dimsum stall!
And here it was! The shop name is literally called $1.30 dimsum!
And here's the menu:
There's no prices since everything is $1.30 of course. But you get different quantities compared to other dimsum restaurants. Generally, the items are pretty similar to other dimsum places we've been to though. And it did look pretty promising!
We wanted to order a couple of our favourite dimsum dishes, like the Fried Beancurd Skin Roll but unfortunately, the stall attendant told us that there were no fried items left at the time. So we could only order the steamed items, which was alright too I guess.
This what what the display of fried stuff was supposed to look like had it been available. It's only around during earlier hours though so I guess after dinner time there's no fried stuff left.
Since we didn't eat a lot of vegetables for dinner, we decided on the spinach dumplings, the chive mai (which we've never seen before), and also the traditional chee cheong fun since that's always a safe bet.
As usual, our dumplings came served within the steamed baskets that we could tell have seen a lot of use. This was the Chive Mai, which I guess is Siew Mai with chives. I love Siew Mai and I like chives so this sounded good.
If you didn't know, Siew Mai (or shumai) is a type of pork and mushroom dumpling. Apparently there are a wide variety of versions, but I'm most familiar with the Cantonese one which is wrapped with a yellow dumpling skin.
And it really was! The chives added to the meat in the siew mai weren't overpowering but added a nice flavour to it. It was really delicious!
This was the chee cheong fun (which is a rice noodle roll with pork/shrimp):
The chee cheong fun was pretty average; nothing to complain or write home about really.
And these were the spinach dumplings:
These were pretty good too; with a mixture of spinach, shrimp and other meat wrapped nicely in translucent/crystal dumpling skin. It was definitely steamy and yummy!
Overall, it was a really delicious snack! I wouldn't say meal since it wasn't enough for a full meal especially between the two of us, but we weren't that hungry anyway as it was past midnight. It was definitely a nice snack though and gave us the energy we needed to continue on our relaxing midnight date!
We've actually been back at the hawker center during normal dinner hours and the dimsum shop is actually really popular! Now I see why; with the price point and relatively convenient location it's excellent for when you have that dimsum craving but don't wish to travel so far to a dimsum restaurant. I think this $1.30 dimsum is part of a chain and they have outlets around Singapore so give it a try when you can!
Thanks so much for reading!
