Hey Hive!
Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again but obviously you have to be vaccinated. But since there aren't any restrictions this allows us to try out different food places again! Recently, the local government even announced that we don't have to wear masks anymore but to maintain personal hygiene I'll still continue wearing masks in public spaces.
This post is a continuation from last week when I shared about how we visited a famous hawker centre here in Singapore called Maxwell Food Centre and tried this so-called "Best Chicken Rice in Singapore".
Unfortunately we were sorely disappointed in the chicken rice as it was not as flavourful as some others we've tried. I think the stall owners may have gotten complacent with all the awards and reputability they've garnered. We thought it was overhyped and overpriced and were kinda disappointed and definitely not satisfied.
So we decided to try another stall which looked pretty interesting! It's called Chee Cheong Fun Club and sells chee cheong fun but not the type that we're accustomed to.
If you're unfamiliar, chee cheong fun is a Cantonese rice noodle roll, or steamed rice roll dish commonly served as a snack or type of dim sum. It's commonly made of a wide strip of rice noodles filled with shrimp, beef, vegetables or pork and seasoned with soy sauce.

I'm personally quite neutral about chee cheong fun, as it tastes pretty okay but nothing spectacular since it's typically slightly sweet and salty while the rice noodle is fairly bland. But we do order it when we eat dim sum since Sean likes it.
Anyway, the thing that caught our eye at Chee Cheong Fun Club was that they not only had the regular chee cheong fun but also a special curry chee cheong fun and laksa chee cheong fun! From the menu it looked like it was curry noodles and laksa respectively ( but with rice noodle rolls instead of yellow egg noodles or thick round rice noodles.

It looked pretty interesting and is definitely not something that we've tried before and since we were hungry from the disappointing chicken rice we decided to give it a try!
A few minutes later, our order of laksa chee cheong fun was ready!
It definitely looked and smelled so good! And there were plenty of other ingredients as well like meatballs and different types of beancurd skin rolls and fish cakes. It was quite a full bowl and the laksa broth was so flavourful without being too spicy. It was actually very hearty and satisfying!
And the rice noodles themselves were soft and slightly chewy. They had a nice texture and actually matched the laksa broth so well! We were wondering why this wasn't a thing sooner because of how compatible the rice noodle was with the very flavourful laksa, especially since chee cheong fun are quite plain on their own. This one bowl was so delicious and definitely topped the chicken rice for me that's for sure.
But since we shared the bowl we were still craving some snacks and decided to try one more stall and came across this dim sum shop selling dumplings!
To be honest I saw some people eating dumplings and since it's been a while since we've had Shanghai dumplings I thought we'd give it a try! Unfortunately we couldn't mix and match between the steamed and fried ones so we ordered the fried dumplings!
After about 10 minutes, they were ready and we got them hot and fresh! The dumplings were served with a side of chili sauce and ginger soy sauce.
They looked and smelled so good! It wasn't super deep fried which was good since it would dry out the dumpling filling but was fried enough so that the edges were crisp.
The dumplings had meat and chives in them and were actually pretty filling for a snack. They were fine on their own but the chili added some slight spice to them as well.
Overall it was a much needed save to a disappointing first dish but we left feeling satisfied thanks to these extra snacks. I'd definitely recommend the Chee Cheong Fun Club stall if you're looking for a hearty noodle soup on a cold day though. That one really hit the spot.
There are also many other stalls at Maxwell worth trying like this roasted meats stall that had such a long line even before they opened! We sadly didn't have the time to queue then but I'm looking forward to trying it in the future.
Thanks so much for reading!
