Hey Hive!
Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again but obviously you have to be vaccinated. But since there aren't any restrictions this allows us to try out different food places again!
So one category of eateries that Sean and I like to visit here in Singapore is known as hawker centres! If you've never patronised one before, they are typically non-air conditioned buildings that house all kinds of food stalls specialising in one or two signature dishes. They're ubiquitous here in Singapore and Malaysia and are known for delicious and affordable food - the perfect combination!
One of our favourite past times has become exploring different hawker centers and trying different stalls in our region of the island nation, and recently we visited this one called Yishun Park Hawker Centre!
This was one of the newer generation of hawker centres that is cleaner, more spacious and more innovative in terms of infrastructure and design. Right off the bat though we were spoilt for choice since there were soo many stalls to choose from here!
There were rows and rows of stalls with around 3 stalls together on either side of the hawker centre.
We took a look around all the stalls while deciding which one to try first. Some of the stalls had yet to open since we went there in the early evening around 5pm.
The reason why I said these newer hawker centres tend to be more innovative is because they tend to have these electronic top-up machines where you had a card you could put money in and use said card to pay at all the stalls here. Granted, most of them also accepted app payment but for those who don't use food apps I guess this was a good substitute.
Anyway, while we looked around we decided to first get a drink since we had to walk a little bit to get here and it was absolutely blazing hot outside. The fans in the hawker centre were strong, but it didn't do enough to cool us down.
We ordered a classic hawker centre drink - Sugarcane juice with lime!
This is a drink you'll find in hawker centres everywhere in Singapore. It's super refreshing although I did read it's also very high in sugar so is not recommended for diabetics. It does serve up a healthy dose of antioxidants and helps to boost immunity and is great for dehydration though, which was what we needed since it was so hot.
After taking a look around, Sean decided on this stall called Ah Tan that specialises in Crispy Chicken Har Cheong Gai, which is fried prawn paste chicken! It's basically fried chicken but made with fermented shrimp paste and a host of other spices and ingredients.
Sean ordered the Wing Wing set, which includes fried chicken wings with aromatic rice and egg, and an extra plate of wings since he thought it was only going to be 2 wings with the rice set.
But we were pleasantly surprised to find that the Wing Wing set also includes two mini drumlettes of sorts. So we ended up with quite a lot of chicken!
The rice was a little bit like Hainanese chicken rice, but with a milder taste. The har cheong gai was perfect though! It didn't have a super strong prawn paste taste but you could still smell and taste it and the chicken itself was tender and juicy on the inside and super crispy on the outside.
It paired really well with the rice and the nice sunny side up with a gooey yolk - one of my favourite types of egg. The chili was also quite nice - a little sour like thai chili but the spice was just right.
Overall, it was a very delicious meal and after traveling on an empty stomach to get here, it was such a relief and soo satisfying! I would definitely eat this again the next time we visit.
We also tried a couple more stalls but I think I'll leave that for next week. So tune in next time for more delicious hawker food - my favourite!
Thanks so much for reading!
