Hey Hive!
It's time to share yet another one of our recent food haunts we found during quarantine! Even though restaurants and eateries in Singapore have been given the okay to enable dining in (with social distancing measures of course), we've still been limiting our time spent eating out, or just being out in general, to be safe.
One of our favourite places to get takeout from is this place called Han's!
This Han's outlet is just a short walk away from (what used to be) our rental place back during the lockdown so we would often order Han's through food delivery apps (like Grab and Foodpanda) and opt for self-collection since it's nearby.
I think to this day, we've never actually dined inside han's before, but from the counter the interior looks pretty simple and comfortable. The colour scheme is synonymous with their logo of red and white, and there are plenty of tables and chairs. Of course nowadays about half of the available seats are blocked off to comply with social distancing measures but it still looks like a nice place to chill and hangout with friends. And since Wilkie Edge is not a very popular place you can pretty much sit there and chitchat until their closing time at 11pm!

I was actually quite surprised at the range of items han's has on their menu the first time we ordered from them. I always thought they mainly sold cakes and desserts since they're called cafe and bakery but they sell a lot of mains as well! I'd say their menu is mostly Western but they do have quite a large category of local Asian dishes too.

On the Western side, they have All-Day breakfast, mains like Chicken Chop and Fish & Chips, various types of Pasta, and Burgers. The local dishes are all under Local Favourites with dishes like Singapore Fried Bee Hoon, Beef Hor Fun and fried rice with different toppings.
Fried Rice is definitely one of our favourites of theirs. And they all come with a sunny side egg on top!
Look at that perfectly round yolk!
One of my personal favourite dishes from han's is the Hong Kong Fried Noodle, which is Stir-fried noodle cooked to a charred flavour with charsiew, shrimps, shredded cabbage, shredded carrots and egg, and served with lime.
I'd say it's basically a noodle version of fried rice.. if that makes sense. The noodles are stir fried to perfection and mix well with all the other ingredients. And the thing I like about han's is they don't use too much oil so it's not too greasy like most noodle dishes in hawker centres.
Sean has also tried their Bacon Carbonara which is not bad. The bacon was a yummy and a little crispy, but the pasta was a little plain.
Sean also tried one of their signature dishes called the Hainanese Pork Chop, which is pork chop slices topped with specialty Hainanese tomato sauce, and served with rice. The pork chop was good, and very similar to pork katsu, but we weren't fans of the tomato sauce. Personally I don't like tomatoes, but I think Sean found it too sour and strange. But I think if it was curry it would've been perfect.
We've mostly only tried their local dishes but they're surprisingly good!
So just a little backstory; han's started off in 1978, when Mr Han Choon Fook opened a small bakery with his siblings in Upper Thomson Road. His brother Choon Kuang was a baker at the former Red House Bakers and Confectioners Shop in Victoria Street, before quitting his job to join the family business.

The first Han's cafe opened in The Arcade in 1980. It acquired a reputation for 'quality food at budget prices' serving Hainanese mainstays such as pork chops and chicken rice to pasta dishes and homemade soups. And in 2003, they opened their biggest outlet called The Tasty Town, covering an area of about 15,000sq feet at the Great Eastern Centre in the Central Business District.
From then on, Han's expanded steadily and now has more than 20 outlets across Singapore, winning many awards and certifications.
What always confused me about han's was that some of their outlets were called hanis, which I just learned are their halal outlets! I used to see them all the time and I initially thought they were 2 different companies for some reason.

han's has outlets in quite a few major malls in each region of Singapore so if you're looking for a good affordable meal in the mall, come home to han's!
