2024 British Silver Tudor Beasts Seymour Unicorn Coin
The Seymour Unicorn is featured on the 2024 British Silver Tudor Beasts Seymour Unicorn Coin's reverse side.
Standing opposite the Lion of England at the front of the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, this symbol of purity and fertility is the chief supporter of Jane Seymour, which was given to her by her husband, Henry VIII, as a gift. Source
Encircled by chains, the mythical creature is clutching Jane Seymour's shield, which is divided into six quarters. The common representation of unicorns wearing collars and chains is a result of the widespread belief that these animals are wild and should be tamed.
With a lion's tail, a goat's beard and cloven feet, a horse's body, and a spiral horn on its forehead, the Seymour Unicorn is a unique animal. Encrusted with a garland of red roses and white daisies, it sports a royal coronet.
The effigy of Charles III is depicted in the obverse field of the 2024 British Tudor Beasts Seymour Unicorn Coin. Charles III is shown in this Martin Jennings painting in relief without a crown.

The origins of the animal's depiction are said to have originated with the knights who fought in Syria and Palestine during the Holy Wars. The painted picture on the knights' shields might perhaps have been confused for a monster that wasn't recognized in their native land.
Some of these spiraled horns would have belonged to narwhals, sea monsters with horns resembling unicorns, and were occasionally brought home as prizes by knights and travelers.

The heraldic beasts that were prominent during Henry VIII’s reign is the focus of the Royal Tudor Beast series. These are The Seymour Panther, The Lion of England, The Bull of Clarence, The Tudor Dragon, The Greyhound of Richmond, The Royal Dragon, The Yale of Beaufort, The Seymour Unicorn, The Queen's Panther, and The Queen's Lion.
Each of the 10 drawings in the Tudor Beast Series is based on one of the 10 heraldic monsters that lined the bridge leading to Hampden Court. In 2023, the collection makes a transition and includes King Charles III's portrait for the first time.
