After looking at the ships at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, we drove to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal which cuts 1.3 miles across the peninsula from Sturgeon Bay to Lake Michigan. This allowed ships to avoid the treacherous "Deaths Door" passage around the tip of the Door Peninsula which claimed many ships over the years.
Back in Sturgeon Bay, I found a plaque that said more than the Wikipedia article about the canal.
So, now we know why the canal was built, when, and how much it cost. Mark Evenson has a YouTube channel showing plenty of drone footage.
Here are pictures of the lighthouses now in place on the Lake Michigan side.
First is the lighthouse on the US Coast Guard Sturgeon Bay station - strictly off limits to the public.
Then, out onto the pier...
I didn't feel like going any further without some safety equipment! (Or Mark Evenson's drone:)
The south lighthouse. There was actually someone out there fishing!
Turning around, we had a lovely view of the mouth of the canal and the Coast Guard station.
There was a flock of pelicans nearby...
Sunrise over Lake Michigan.
Next, we go back into Sturgeon Bay to walk around a bit and enjoy a surprise.
