There was a time, several years ago, when all my family lived right here, in my city, in my country; now some of them are far away, in other countries and I certainly miss them very much. In those days I lived at my grandmother's house, with my brother, my mother and my uncles and aunts. We were always fighting, but we were family; even if there were arguments, after a while we were happy, eating at the same table next to each other. Well, I remember that in those days, when my older brother was 18 years old, we argued a lot. Not only with each other, but also with my cousin, who was too much of a troublemaker and dragged the others down with his problems. I, on the other hand, didn't cause too much trouble at home, I didn't go out, I didn't drink, I didn't keep bad company; come on, I behaved well, I only went to college and the rest of the time I spent at home, studying and doing whatever else. When we were younger we were all very close, even inseparable I would say, so why did we argue? I'll tell you.

Hubo un tiempo, hace varios años atrás, en el que toda mi familia vivía aquí mismo, en mi ciudad, en mi país; ahora algunos están lejos, en otros países y ciertamente los extraño mucho. En aquellos tiempos yo vivía en casa de mi abuela, con mi hermano, mi mamá y mis tíos. Siempre peleábamos, pero éramos familia; aunque hubiese discusiones, al rato ya estábamos contentos, comiendo en la misma mesa uno al lado del otro. Pues bien, recuerdo que en estos tiempos, cuando mi hermano mayor tenía 18 años, discutíamos demasiado. No solo entre nosotros, sino también con mi primo, que era demasiado problemático y arrastraba a los demás con sus problemas. Yo, por el contrario, no causaba demasiados problemas en la casa, no salía, no bebía, no tenía malas compañías; vamos, me comportaba bien, solo iba a la universidad y el resto del tiempo la pasaba en casa, estudiando y haciendo cualquier otra cosa. De más chicos eramos muy unidos todos, hasta inseparables diría yo, ¿entonces por qué discutíamos? Ya les cuento.

Because of my brother's bad behavior, I argued a lot with him, because he made my mother and other family members very anxious. He had problems with alcohol, kept bad company and was always getting into money problems. Time after time we had to come to his aid so that bad things wouldn't happen to him, and that bothered me, so I argued with him a lot.

That period of time was not the best for me in terms of the way I treated my brother, i admit that. I was very aggressive with him, I complained to him all the time, I always made a bad face at him, I was very annoyed with the way he acted. I was always angry with him and I never gave him the support that I feel I should have given him, considering that he is the only brother I have on my mother's and father's side. I remember, for example, one occasion when I should have acted differently. It was one night when I was very upset, I don't remember why. That night my brother knocked on my door to ask for help with something he couldn't solve and I could. If you think about how much we argued, it must have been very difficult for him to come to me; maybe he had no one else to come to, so he went to my room, knocked on my door and asked for my help. What did I do? I didn't pay attention to him, didn't answer and slammed the door in his face.

Admito que ese período de tiempo no fue el mejor para mi, en cuanto a la forma en cómo trataba a mi hermano. Era muy agresivo con él, le reclamaba todo el tiempo, siempre le hacía mala cara, me molestaba mucho su forma de actuar. Siempre andaba enojado con él y nunca le prestaba el apoyo que siento que debí haberle prestado, considerando que es el único hermano que tengo por parte de madre y padre. Recuerdo, por ejemplo, una ocasión en la que debí haber actuado de manera distinta. Fue una noche en la que yo estaba muy molesto, no recuerdo por qué. Esa noche mi hermano tocó a mi puerta para pedirme ayuda para algo que él no podía resolver y yo sí. Si piensan en cuánto discutíamos, debió haber sido muy difícil para él acudir a mí; quizás no tenía a nadie más a quien acudir, así que fue a mi cuarto, tocó mi puerta y pidió mi ayuda. ¿Qué hice yo? Today, that scene plays over and over again in my head and I find it impossible to hold back the urge to cry. On more than one occasion I have had doors slammed in my face, on more than one occasion I have been ignored and rejected, but this has come from people who are not family. This happened to my brother and it was me, his brother, who didn't pay attention to him and slammed the door in his face. I was very young, immature and didn't have the mindset I have now. I think about how my brother must have felt about that rejection and it makes me feel like garbage. When I think about this I simply wish I had not acted that way, but in a more loving, understanding, caring and attentive way. What do I wish I had done? Not slam the door in his face in the first place, see what he needed and give him the support he was asking for. I was his brother, I should have helped him...

Hoy en día, esa escena se repite vez tras vez en mi cabeza y me resulta imposible aguantar las ganas de llorar. En más de una ocasión me han cerrado las puertas en la cara, en más de una ocasión no me han prestado atención y me han rechazado, pero esto ha venido de personas que no son familiares. A mi hermano le ocurrió esto y fui yo, su hermano, quien no le prestó atención y le cerró la puerta en la cara. Era muy joven, inmaduro y no tenía la forma de pensar que tengo ahora. Pienso en cómo debió sentirse mi hermano ante ese rechazo y esto me hace sentir como basura. Cuando pienso en esto simplemente deseo no haber actuado así, sino de una manera más amorosa, comprensible, cariñosa y atenta. ¿Que qué me gustaría haber hecho? No cerrarle la puerta en la cara en primer lugar, ver qué necesitaba y prestarle el apoyo que me estaba pidiendo. Era su hermano, debí haberlo ayudado…

He is far away, he left years ago and he certainly took a bad image of me, of that immature boy who should have supported him in those difficult times. Today I am very different from how I was in those times, so if you doubt I didn't show my best version to my dear brother...

Créanme, hay noches en que me pongo a pensar en estas cosas y simplemente se me va el sueño. No tengo a mi hermano cerca para ir a verlo mañana, darle un abrazo, pedirle perdón por las cosas que hice y decirle cuánto lo quiero. Él está lejos, se fue hace años y ciertamente se llevó una mala imagen de mí, de aquel muchacho inmaduro que debió haberlo apoyado en esos momentos tan difíciles. Life often teaches us through bad memories.
