Es temprano por la mañana y Matthew va en el transporte de su primer trabajo, se dirige a un lugar algo apartado, llega a las instalaciones y se maravilla por lo hermoso y grande del lugar, este se encontraba en una hermosa montaña bordeada por un bosque, el lugar estaba custodiado por el ejército porque antiguamente en la zona se encontraba un reactor de investigación; por seguridad estos edificios se colocaban en lugares remotos bien alejados de los centros urbanos, con el tiempo este quedo en desuso y el gobierno lo vendió a un consorcio privado dedicado a la investigación en el área médica. El director y jefe del lugar llevó a cabo la recuperación y convirtió todo el lugar en el edificio más automatizado y vigilado del país, también convirtió el reactor en un sistema de esterilización de equipos quirúrgicos, sumado a otros servicios de calibración y actualización de equipos médicos, todo el complejo contaba con tecnología de última generación. Mat llegó a su oficina con mucha facilidad. Una asistente virtual aparecía en cada ventana y pantalla del edificio del reactor señalándole que se hacía en cada laboratorio por donde pasaban. Durante el almuerzo nota que todos están muy contentos y piensa que está en el mejor trabajo que se podía conseguir. Mat termina su almuerzo en el comedor y de regreso a su oficina pasa por el enorme pórtico de cristal, baja las escalera y tras caminar el alargado sótano entra en su oficina donde solo esta el, un escritorio con una pantalla y un teclado, estaba tan alejada que la salida de emergencia le quedaba al frente de su puerta. A Mat lo único que le incomodaba era lo alejado que estaba del baño, pero le gustaba visitarlo porque así notaba el estado del clima y respiraba aire fresco de la montaña.

Luego de varios meses nuestro amigo empezó a pensar que aquella alegría de la que todos gozavan era monotona y extraña, durante algunas guardias se percató que los puestos de los técnicos encargados de vigilar la esterilización quedaban vacíos hasta que amanecía. Un día ,después de adelantar muchas de sus obligaciones, salió a caminar las inmediaciones del edificio luego del almuerzo y notó un brillo entre los pinos que bordeaban el edificio, Mat pensó que con tanta neblina debía ser una de sus miodesopsias, al regresar al edificio la neblina había empañado todo el cristal de la entrada y de pronto cada persona con la que se cruzaba se la quedaba viendo, algo apenado fue al tocador a revisar si tenía algo en la cara, al no encontrar nada, continuó su camino a la oficina; Mat seguía confundido, la gente lo seguía mirando y al llegar a su oficina muchos sintieron interés por él, lo saludaban, preguntaban por su pasado, a que familia pertenecía, mientras transcurría la tarde empezó a recibir visitas de todos los que laboraban en las instalaciones, hasta su jefe lo visitó en conjunto con varios directivos llevando café, galletas y varios postres para merendar. en aquel pasillo que había permanecido solitario durante tantos meses no cabía ningún alma más, el ruido de aquella gente era tenue, parecido al sonido de la neblina espesa entre los árboles que había visto hacía unas horas.

Mat no sabía que pensar, sus superiores hacían preguntas sobre cómo le parecía el lugar, hablaban de su desempeño y uno que otro chiste, en un punto las palabras dejaron de fluir lentamente mientras sus miradas se quedaban fijas vacías e inexpresivas en su dirección, al mismo tiempo Mat sentía como el frío invadía su corazón y lentamente corría por sus venas. Involuntariamente él le dijo a todos en su oficina que volvía en un momento, todos los que estaban en el pasillo le abrieron paso y lo saludaban con una breve sonrisa, este se percató que todo el personal estaba en el recinto, hasta los que no tenían turno llegaron sin el uniforme, Mat trató de asimilar todo aquello dentro del baño, fue al único lugar donde nadie lo siguió, notó que el frió seguía esparciéndoce por todo su cuerpo al punto que todo lo que tocaba parecía estar caliente, hasta el agua del grifo con la que limpió varias veces su rostro le parecía cálida. Un suave aroma a orquídeas impregnó el cuarto de baño, mientras admiraba aquel olor tan sublime escuchó un silbido que venía del bosque que rodeaba aquel lugar, se asomó por la ventana y vio como en grupos salían todos por aquella puerta de cristal, la tarde empezaba a asomarse y el cielo languidecía en un tono rojo intenso.

Al ver esto, corrió hacia su oficina para buscar sus cosas y tomar el transporte de salida, ya no quedaba nadie en el sótano que hacía poco estaba completamente abarrotado. En menos de 5 minutos arregló sus cosas y por la premura decidió salir por aquella puerta de emergencia al frente de su oficina, al cruzarle se percató que el cielo estaba oscuro como la noche. No quedaba ni un alma de aquella multitud con la que había compartido hace 10 minutos. Caminó unos metros y notó que al fondo de la vía de acceso estaba iluminado con aquel peculiar atardecer que vio desde el baño, así que corrió rápidamente hacia la luz, a medida que se acercaba se intensificaba aquel sublime olor a orquídeas del baño, a mitad de camino sus pasos se habían vuelto más pesados y lentos aunque sentía que flotaba sobre aquella oscuridad tan densa y pegajosa, estaba seguro que aquello era muy real. Fue consciente de que el tiempo parecía detenerse, sus ojos los sintió vitrificados, llenos de escarcha de hielo, sus venas se irritaban con el pasar de su sangre gélida parecida a la arena, cada paso le generaba un dolor distante, como si sus extremidades estuvieran a miles de kilómetros.

Matthew se detuvo en aquella oscuridad sin ningún síntoma de cansancio o estrés, su respiración era profunda aunque no producía el vaho que habitualmente aparecía cuando salía a almorzar al comedor; de forma automática su rostro pintó una sonrisa involuntaria, cuando quiso parpadear para hidratar sus ojos estos se quedaron cerrados durante varios segundos y al abrirlos se encontraba frente aquella luz que había confundido con una ilusión al medio día, asustado intentó huir, pero Mat estaba petrificado ante aquella presencia, luego de media hora apareció otra luz entre los árboles del fondo y súbitamente nuestro amigo empezó a sentir paz y gozo. Una inmensa alegría lo invadió y dejó de comprender todo lo que le rodeaba, ya no eran árboles, ni pavimento, ni las hojas, ni aquel sublime olor a orquídeas, solo entendía que tenía al frente aquella luz y lo demás se convertía en neblina.
