Pedro Juan Gutiérrez (Matanzas, Cuba, 1950) no escribe para gustar. Escribe para remover y es posible que también para escandalizar. "Animal Tropical" es un libro donde el erotismo no negocia con la ternura, el amor se declara como posesión y la violencia es gramática. Veamos. Uno: Pedro Juan destruye la ficción del sexo recíproco. No hay encuentro. Hay captura. El narrador que elige para contar su historia no busca placer compartido: busca aniquilar la voluntad del otro. «Serás esclava y reina», dice y eso no es una contradicción. Aunque parezca. Sin embargo, viene a ser, algo así como el mecanismo de una dominación que se viste de devoción. El cinturón verde oliva no es un fetiche que utiliza para jugar con Gloria, su mulata amante del barrio de Centro Habana, es un anzuelo al deseo. Para este narrador-perdonaje, se aprende. Dos: El cuerpo femenino es campo de batalla y altar. Ningún fluido queda fuera. El narrador lame un «cementerio de espermatozoides» y lo celebra. No hay asco. Hay liturgia. Pero ojo: esta celebración no es liberación. Es apropiación. La mujer preñada, con senos chorreando leche, es la imagen final: madre. Adorada y poseída. Tres: Animal Tropical plantea la literatura es canibalismo. El narrador - personaje, sin dudas, Alter ego del escritor confiesa que se alimenta de sus amigos y los convierte en ficción. Carmita lo llama «hiena», «Drácula». Él se ríe. Porque la regla del oficio es esta: la autenticidad se paga con crueldad. Si no estás dispuesto a exhibir lo que duele, eres un payaso.

En realidad de esta y de cualquiera de las novelas de Pedro Juan, saca al ruedo el terreno más escatológico del llamado "realismo sucio". Lo hace en: Anclado en tierra de nadie, Nada que hacer, Sabor a mí, El Rey de La Habana, El insaciable hombre araña y en Carne de perro. Un par de emociones puede provocar la lectura de Animal Tropical. La incomodidad. No la intelectual. La visceral. El narrador no negocia: «Tú aprendes a gozar o te mueres». No es metáfora. Es programa. La fascinación. Pedro Juan Gutiérrez escribe sin doblez. Sin coartada moral. El lector asiste al desnudo de una subjetividad que ha decidido no mentirse. Eso atrae. Un mensaje: Animal Tropical no es una novela erótica es como el diario de guerra de un hombre que ha decidido que la autenticidad vale más que la bondad. Y que la literatura no redime: expone. >"Creo que un escritor, si siente de verdad lo que está haciendo, no tiene limites. Y tampoco tiene límites lo que escribe o los personajes que crea: siempre sucede que llega el momento en que los personajes mandan; no eres tú, a veces te rebasan. No hay fronteras. He does so in: Anchored in No Man's Land, Nothing to Do, A Taste of Me, The King of Havana, The Insatiable Spider-Man, and Dog Meat. Reading Tropical Animal can provoke a couple of emotions. Discomfort. Not intellectual discomfort. Visceral discomfort. The narrator doesn't compromise: "You learn to enjoy life or you die." It's not a metaphor. It's a statement. Fascination. Pedro Juan Gutiérrez writes without pretense. Without a moral alibi. The reader witnesses the nakedness of a subjectivity that has decided not to lie to itself. That's what's captivating. A message: Tropical Animal is not an erotic novel; it's like the war diary of a man who has decided that authenticity is worth more than kindness. And that literature doesn't redeem: it exposes. "I believe that a writer, if they truly feel what they're doing, has no limits. And neither do what they write or the characters they create: there always comes a point when the characters take over; it's not you, sometimes they surpass you. There are no boundaries.
