リトープスはアフリカ原産の植物で、乾燥地帯で石に擬態して生き延びている植物です。その珍奇さ、美しさ、色や模様の多様さから「生きる宝石」とも呼ばれています。 冬に成長する植物で、毎年この時期になると上の写真のように花を咲かせます。今年も咲きました。 で、花が咲くということは種ができます。綿棒などで受粉させれば冬を越した翌春に採集できます。

この季節、リトープスの脱皮を観察することの他、もう一つやることがあります。リトープスの種を採取することです。リトープスは冬の初めに花を咲かせますが、その半年後の現在、ようやく種を収穫できます。 黄色で囲んだところに種が詰まっています。これをピンセットで慎重に抜き取ります。抜けない場合はハサミやニッパーで切ります。リトープス本体を傷つけないように注意します。

不思議な植物として紹介されることも多いリトープス。原産地はアフリカで厳しい環境の中を石に擬態して生き延びています。茎などはなく、ずっとこのままの姿。色彩が豊かなことから「生きる宝石」と形容されることもあります。
