Although I am no artist and not a true Bob Ross fan, I do enjoy some of his quotes. While pondering a title for this post, my daughter reminded me of his line which appears in my title.
We had gone for a Sunday drive to Green Bluff, an area of orchards and gardens north of the city of Spokane, Washington. After weeks of hot, dry weather, it was actually rainy and cooler that day, so we only made one stop, with the intent of buying peaches to bake a pie. I was appalled by the price of peaches: I paid $15 for a dozen of them. But the young man who was helping bag up the peaches took the time to find ripe ones so we could use them right away.
After pondering her lack of a rolling pin and lack of counter space in her apartment, we opted to buy a ready-made refrigerated pie crust to simplify things. My daughter is 37 1/2 weeks pregnant, and had two whopper contractions while we were in the grocery store, but that all settled down after we were back at her place. I proceeded to launch into pie baking.
Of course, my favorite pie cookbook was at my house, an hour away. So she looked up a recipe online and took screen shots of it and texted them to me. Alas, I am sometimes technologically challenged. And I have a new phone. I wondered why bits of the recipe were missing, but just made the best of it and got the pie into the oven.
Then I reminded her she had said something about nutmeg, but I hadn't seen it in the recipe. THEN I found out I was supposed to have clicked on each segment of the text in order to open each entire screen shot. Oops. Not only did I leave out the nutmeg, I also left out the flour! I have been baking pies for years, and I knew something was missing, but I was so tired from months of poor sleep (that's another story), I couldn't figure it out.
I was so disgusted with the whole mess, I was ready to just toss it in the trash and forget about it. But my daughter convinced me it would be fine. And it was. Just runny. We smooshed a slice all together in a bowl, sprinkled on some nutmeg, and it was a very tasty treat.
In a very short time, half the pie was gone. I wonder where it went? Hee hee.
