Hey Hive!
Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again but obviously you have to be vaccinated. But since there aren't any restrictions this allows us to try out different food places again! Recently, the local government even announced that we don't have to wear masks anymore but to maintain personal hygiene I'll still continue wearing masks in public spaces.
We'd seen this Chinese soup restaurant before and always wanted to try it so when it was rainy the other day we thought it was perfect weather for some healthy and hearty soup!
The restaurant is called Lao Huo Tang and I guess the literal English translation is Old Fire Soup? As you can tell it's very Chinese and their menu features different types of traditional Chinese soups that are gentle tonics made from fresh vegetables, lean meat or pork ribs and flavoured only by natural ingredients – making the soups naturally low fat, low calorie and low sodium.
I guess it's also endorsed by a couple of local celebrities and their featured soups are Pork Tripe Soup and Beauty Collagen Soup.
Apparently this chain initially started in a hawker centre in 2008, and ventured into the restaurant business in 2011 bringing more nourishing Cantonese style soups and home fashion cook food to its customers.
They have quite a few outlets now and this particular branch was pretty spacious with a long aisle at the front of the restaurant with part of the open concept kitchen. There were also the huge soup pots stored here where the soups were cooked and kept I'm sure.
It was a weekday so thankfully it wasn't crowded and we were shown to a table immediately and we took a look at the menu to see what other soups they had.
They have a number of Signature Soups with different vegetables and meat.
And a number of vegetable dishes among other Cantonese-style homemade dishes.
But since we were ordering soup and rice we didn't want to order too much so we decided to get a beancurd dish.
And less than 10 minutes later, our soup arrived! We ordered the Beauty Collagen Soup with Peach Gum and it came in a cute little pot!
We ordered a bowl of rice each and it paired so well with the soup! The soup itself was very flavourful and delicious with a good balance of saltiness and sweetness. The chicken was also very tender and the meat just slipped off the bone. The soup looked quite grainy but it was quite smooth and definitely savoury but not oily. It definitely tasted pretty healthy but still very flavourful for sure.
The other dish we ordered was this stir-fried beancurd with gravy and bok choy. It wasn't crispy because of the gravy but the gravy was very tasty albeit a little salty but very delicious and also matched white rice really well.
It was definitely a very filling meal especially with the free refills of soup! We actually didn't know that the soup came with free refills so it was a nice surprise!
I was so full from the soup but the beancurd was very yummy too and Sean ended up finishing his rice too quickly so I gave him more. The soup was more than enough to fill me up anyway.
We only refilled our soup once but I did drink a lot that it was almost 2 pots! The pot itself looked quite small but with how much stuff is in the soup and how much flavour there was it really fills you up quickly.
We'll be eating there again and trying different soups next time but if you ever have a hankering for some healthy soup, definitely try Lao Huo Tang!
Thanks so much for reading!
